GLEN ROSE, Texas -- Midwestern State set school records on the way to winning the stroke play portion of the Lone Star Conference Championships Tuesday afternoon at the Squaw Valley Golf Course.
The Mustangs fired the best team score in each of the final two rounds finishing with totals of 283, 271 and 276 for a 34-under 830 to edge West Texas A&M by four strokes.
Midwestern State earned the top seed and move on to medal match play Tuesday afternoon against No. 4-seeded Oklahoma Christian, while West Texas A&M earned the No. 2 seed and face No. 3-seeded Cameron.
The winners move on to the final round to play for the Lone Star Conference championship and receive the league automatic bid to the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regionals to be held May 5-7 at the Pueblo (Colo.) Country Club.
Midwestern State set 54-hole standards with a total of 830 to better the previous mark of 832 set at the 2017 Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions Classic played at the Hardscrabble Country Club.
The Mustangs set the best score versus par at 34-under improving by 10 strokes over the previous record of 24-under set at the 2009 Lone Star Conference Championships at the WinStar Golf Course.
Junior
Jake Leatherwood recorded a season low, 6-under 66 to lead MSU's efforts in the final round. The Snyder native turned in a clean card with an eagle on the par-5, 533-yard 12th hole to go along with four birdies.
He moved into a tie for ninth place with a 10-under total of 206 after logging scores of 72 and 68 on Monday.
Sophomore
Ethen Wolf carded six birdies on the way to a 3-under 69 to move into 18th overall with a 5-under total of 211. It was second consecutive round in the 60s after turning in tallies of 75 and 67 on opening day.
Senior
Jake Doggett battled through four bogeys, but counteracted with six birdies to close the final round with a 2-under 70.Â
It was his 16th consecutive par-or-better round on his way to his 15th consecutive Top 10 finish logging tallies of 66, 68 and 70 for a 12-under 204.
Junior
Garrett Leek finished the tournament with consecutive par-or-better scores going 75, 72 and 71 for a 2-over 217 to finish 37th, while junior
Mason Mikeska tied for 32nd with scores of 73, 65 and 78 for an even-par 216.
