Wolf, Mikeska lead MSU's second-round surge at LSC Championships

Doggett tied for second through 36 holes

GLEN ROSE, Texas -- Midwestern State knew it would have to be in attack mode in the opening two rounds in the Lone Star Conference Championships at Squaw Valley Golf Course.

"The course is open and the greens are receptive," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "We knew there would be some low scores on this course. I told the guys to give themselves enough chances and opportunities to score."

Senior Jake Doggett, who rarely needs a nudge to go low, took the opportunity to card 14 birdies on his way to tallies of 66 and 68 for a 10-under total of 134 to tie for second through 36 holes.

The stream of red numbers across his scorecard pushed his career total to 374 birdies to move past former All American Derek Oland for the lead in yet another category in the MSU record books. Oland posted 369 birdies from 2012-15.

Doggett is just two strokes back of the individual lead behind Texas A&M International's Mauricio Figueroa, who fired scores of 65 and 67.

But Midwestern State owes its second-round surge Mason Mikeska and Ethen Wolf, who combined to go 12-under.

"They put us in a position to be successful tomorrow," Ray said. "The first goal is to be in medal match position, then to win that. It is a little different strategy than usual."

Mikeska was brilliant in the second round firing a season low 65 logging six birdies on his first 14 holes before scoring an eagle on the 18th hole to go to 8-under. He took a bogey on par-3, 230-yard Hole No. 2, which played as the most the most difficult on the course.

Mikeska rode the momentum to 10th on the leaderboard following an opening round 73 for a 6-under total of 138.

Wolf strung together five consecutive birdies to finish with nine red numbers for a season low, 5-under 67 in the second round. He tied for 23rd with a 2-under 142.

Midwestern State's 17-under team total in the second round proved historic with Mikeska's 65, Wolf's 67, Doggett's 68 and Jake Leatherwood's 71 totaling a 271.

The score is the program's low round to par surpassing a 14-under 274 in the 2010 LSC Championships at WinStar Golf Course.

The Mustangs, who logged a 283 (-5) total in the opening round, also set program 36-hole lows for total score (554) and low versus par.

Midwestern previously fired a 556 at the 2017 UAFS Lions Classic at Hardscrabble Country Club and were 16-under at the 2017 NCAA Division II West/South Central Region Championship at Brookside Country Club in Stockton, Calif. and in the 2009 LSC Championships also at WinStar Golf Course.

Leatherwood logged scores of 69 and 71 for a 4-under total of 140 to tie for 14th, while junior Garrett Leek carded a 75 and 72 to tie for 42nd with a 3-over 147.

Midwestern State stands two strokes behind tournament leading West Texas A&M (272-280 552/-24) followed by third-place Cameron (285-272 557/-19) and fourth-place UT Tyler (282-276 558/-18).

The final round of stroke play begins with a shotgun start Tuesday at 8 a.m.

The top four teams advance to medal match play to decide the conference champion. The semifinal round is set for Tuesday afternoon followed by the title pairing Wednesday morning.

The winner also receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional set for May 5-7 at the Pueblo (Colo.) Country Club.
