BULLARD, Texas -- Midwestern State is in great position to win its second tournament of the season in the King-Alfred Invitational.

MSU senior Jake Doggett once again climbed his way back to the top of the leaderboard and is primed to stake his claim to a program record fifth individual win at Eagle's Bluff Country Club.

The Mustangs dominated stroke play through the first 36 holes carding totals of 288 and 290 for a 10-over 578 to take a five-stroke lead over UT Tyler.

But Midwestern suffered a setback in the medal match portion of tournament falling 3 and 2 to home standing UT Tyler in the Monday's second round after beating Texas A&M International by the same margin earlier in the day.

"Our main focus is to get the four best scores for stroke play," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "Match play is something we need to get better at."

Doggett continued his sparkling run by logging his 17th and 18th par-or-better scores in 25 competition rounds.

"Jake is at it again, but even he would say he left a lot of strokes out there today," Ray said. "The greens are really slow and we're having a lot of trouble adjusting."

The Hutto native carded scores of 71 and 69 for a 2-under 140 and is tied for first with Lubbock Christian's Jeffrey Maciejewski, who notched seven birdies on his way to a 68 in the second round.

Garrett Leek stands third with a 1-over 143 propelled by his ninth par-or-better score of 70 in the opening round. He finished off the second round with a 73.

"Garrett is starting to come out of his struggles. He looked good today and he also had trouble adjusting to the speed of the greens today," Ray said.

Junior Jake Leatherwood carded scores of 73 and 74 for tie for 16th with a 5-over 147, while sophomore Ethen Wolf notched matching 74s to stand 20th with a 6-over 148.

Junior Mason Mikeska is 41 after carding tallies of 80 and 79.

"From tee-to-green, we hit the ball well today. Every tee shot is very demanding. I thought we hit it really well," Ray said. "We've had 36 holes on the greens today, so we should be able to adjust tomorrow."

The final round of the King-Alfred Invitational begins with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8:30.
