No. 38 Mustangs win stretch snapped by No. 25 SOSU in 3-4 battle

DURANT, Okla. -- The No. 25th-ranked Southeastern Oklahoma State handed Midwestern State their first loss in the month of March, ending their 11-match streak. After claiming the doubles point and Casie Curry and Emilija Visic's singles battles, the 38th-ranked Mustangs fell by a 3-4 score in their second road drop.

MSU holds a 13-4 record, still on track for one of the best seasons since 2014.

Anda Ghinga and Hannah Yip started the match with a 6-4 win against Georgia Hosking and Skye Royall. The 40th-ranked duo remains undefeated and holds a 12-match stride at the No. 1 spot.

Skylar Minns and Sydney Williams clinched the doubles point for MSU at the No. 3 line. The pair posted a 7-5 score over Elizaveta Tregubova and Chiara Matteodo for their seventh consecutive victory. Minns and Williams hold an 11-4 record for the year.

The 43rd-ranked duo of Curry and Visic did not finish the battle at the No. 2 line against the No. 46th-ranked Vanessa Cozamanis and Sara Gonzalez.

Ghinga fell 6-7, 0-6 at the No. 1 position to cut her four-match streak. The No. 42nd-ranked sophomore dropped to Vanessa Nitu. Ghinga holds an 11-5 record from the top singles line.

The Storm clinched their second match point after Royall defeated No. 73rd-ranked Yip at the second position. The Mustang freshman fell by 1-6, 3-6 to go to a 9-8 record on the year.

Minns tallied a 10-5 record after falling to Cozamanis at the No. 6 line. The Southeastern Oklahoma senior went 6-4, 6-3 in the Mustang sophomore's fifth drop at the sixth position.

Ethne Dowling lost to Matteodo in the match decider at the third spot. The junior's third-straight drop was by a 5-7, 4-6 score. She is now at a 6-6 record for 2022.

Curry bought the Mustangs another point as she defeated Tregubova in three sets. The sophomore's 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory marked her eighth straight. Curry is 10-3 for the season.

Visic kept her undefeated run after outlasting Gonzalez at the No. 5 line. The sophomore went 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) to claim her 11th consecutive win of the season. Visic is 8-0 at the fifth spot.

Midwestern State has a chance to rebound later this week with two Lone Star Conference matches. MSU faces Western New Mexico on Friday, March 25, in Silver City, N.M. The start time is set for 12 p.m. at WNMU Tennis Courts. The Mustangs then face UT Permian Basin on Saturday, March 26, at Bush Tennis Center. First serve is set for 12 p.m. in Midland, Texas.
