ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- Midwestern State claimed its fifth-straight win beating Ouachita Baptist 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Ward Tennis Center.
The 23rd-ranked Mustangs took the doubles point and the first five singles battles to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Casie Curry and
Emilija Visic hold the No. 31 spot in the national doubles ranks. The duo swept Olivia Gaston and Clarisa Valenzuela at the second line. Visic and Curry are 4-1 since starting play together on March 2. Curry is 6-2 for the season and Visic is 6-4.
Skylar Minns and
Sydney Williams tallied a 6-1 win over Makeliah Turner and Taylor Hansard at the No. 3 spot. The pair are 5-4 and broke a two-match losing streak with the victory. Williams and Minns are both 6-4 in all doubles play for the year.
The No. 26 ranked pair of
Anda Ghinga and
Hannah Yip secured the point for MSU with their 6-2 defeat of Austynn Crocker and Shelly Davilus. The duo has won five straight duels since pairing together on March 2. Ghinga is 7-3 in doubles while Yip is 8-2.
Curry tallied a 4-3 record after beating Gaston at the third singles spot by a 6-3, 6-2 score. The junior is 1-1 at the third line for the Mustangs.
Yip clinched her second straight win from the number two position. The freshman overtook Crocker by 6-3, 6-2 to go 5-5 on the season. She is the only player to compete in the second position for MSU this season.
This week's Lone Star Conference Player of the Week, Ghinga, completed her fifth consecutive victory at No. 1. The 40th-ranked sophomore ousted Turner by a 7-5, 6-2 score. Ghinga is 7-3 playing from the top spot all season.
Visic remains undefeated on the season, going 6-0 from the third, fourth, and fifth lines. The sophomore and Valenzuela battled to three sets with Visic coming out on top with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) score at the No. 4 spot.
Minns followed with the final point for the Mustangs. The sophomore is 8-2 for the season with her 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Davilus at No. 5.
Williams suffered her fourth straight loss as Ali May took down the freshman in three sets. The sixth singles line score of 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) was the Tigers' only point of the match. Williams is 3-4 overall and 0-2 at No. 6.
Midwestern State takes on Montevallo (Ala.) and Southern Arkansas Saturday at the Live Oaks Tennis Courts in Magnolia, Ark. The matches at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., respecitvely.
