HUMBLE, Texas -- Jake Doggett surged to his 25th collegiate Top 10 finish firing a final round 69 in the Houston Classic played at the famed Houston Golf Club.
 
The senior from Hutto spearheaded a great turnover for the Mustangs, who fired a 1-over team total of 289 to finish fifth on the team leaderboard. MSU battled to scores 307 and 308 in Monday's opening two rounds.
 
The Mustangs moved up two spots to with a 54-hole team total of 904 (+40) to finish behind Arkansas Tech (860/-4), Oklahoma Christian (884/+20), Cameron (889/+25) and Central Oklahoma (903/+39).
 
"We were much better today," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "The course played a lot easier today. It was a good bounce back round. We can build on today and look forward to San Antonio in a few weeks."
 
Doggett delivered his seventh score and 10th round in the red in 17 tournament rounds to move into a tie for seventh carding tallies of 73, 76 and 69 for a 2-over 218.
 
He finished five strokes behind a trio of golfers tied at the top of the individual leader board with a 3-under total of 213 including Arkansas Tech's Francois Jacobs (71-74-68) and Santiago De La Fuente (75-65-73) as well as Central Oklahoma Evan Griffith (66-73-74).
 
"Jake was great from tee-to-green today," Ray said. "He made enough putts to go 3-under today and he would tell you he could have gone lower. He makes it look easy sometimes."
 
Junior Mason Makeska finished tied for 19th  carding scores of 77, 75 and 73 for a 9-over 225, while junior Jake Leatherwood tied for 24th with a 10-over 226 (73, 80, 73).
 
Freshman Ryan Hailey finished strong with a 2-over 74 after marking an 85 and 79 in the first two rounds. He finished tied for 57th with a 22-over total of 238.
 
"Mason gave us a lot of contributions for a 5-man, but he is probably better than a 5-man," Ray said. "I was really proud of Ryan Hailey for bouncing back."
 
Junior Garrett Leek (84-78-79) tied for 68th with 25-over 241, while sophomore J.T. Boyd (74-78-83) tied for 49th with 19-over 235 playing as individual medalist only.
 
Midwestern State competes in the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational on Feb. 21-22 at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio.
