SAN ANTONIO -- Midwestern State's Jake Doggett fired a 4-under 68 in the final round of the Rattler Invitational Tuesday afternoon at The Dominion County Club to cruise to his third individual win of the season.

Doggett carded scores of 72, 70 and 68 for a 6-under total of 210 to win by six strokes over runner-up Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk of Texas A&M-Commerce. 

"He was never in danger of putting up a big number," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "He was in total control of his game."

Doggett fired a tournament-best 14 birdies while taking advantage of distance and club control by going 6-under on the Par-5s and 1-under on the Par-4s.

The senior Hutto also earned individual medalist honors at the season opening Writz at Mile High tournament in September, then won the Midwestern State Invitational.

The three wins in a season in a season are the second-most in program history and is just one behind Derek Oland's four victories set in 2013-14. Doggett's five career wins are also the second most in school history by Oland's nine from 2012-15.

His final round total of 68 matched Oland (2015) for the lowest round by an MSU golfer at The Dominion Country Club. He became the second Midwestern student-athlete to post an under-par score through 54 holes joining Travis Klutts (75-70-70), who posted a 1-under total of 215 to take fourth at the 2010 Bruce Williams Memorial.

"He really makes it look easy and we know this isn't easy," Ray said.

Midwestern State also delivered a big day as a team combining to fire a 4-under 284 to finish fourth overall with a 13-over, 54-hole team total of 877. The Mustangs finished behind Cameron (874 / +10), Texas A&M-Commerce (875 / +11) and St. Mary's (876 / +12).

Junior Garrett Leek shot his eighth par-or-better score of the years firing a 2-under 70 to tie for 16th with a 5-over total of 221. He fired four of his nine birdies of the tournament in the final round.

"Garrett came around and gave us one of the scores we are accustomed to getting from him," Ray said.

Junior Jake Leatherwood tied for 21st marking scores of 73, 75 and 74 for a 6-over total of 222. He recorded a team-best 36 pars and ranked among tournament leaders by going 2-over on the Par-4s.

Sophomore Ethen Wolf followed up scores of 77 and 76 in the opening two rounds to fire an even-par 72 to finish 36th with a 9-over total of 225.

"Ethen was exceptional in his first tournament traveling and playing with the team," Ray said.

Junior Mason Mikeska (77-77-84) tied for 67th with a 22-over total of 238.

Midwestern State competes in the Texas A&M-Commerce Lion Invitational on March 21-22 at The Trophy Club Country Club.
