SAN ANTONIO -- Midwestern State's Jake Doggett got off to an inauspicious start to the second round in the Rattler Invitational Monday at The Dominion Country Club.

The senior bogeyed the par-3, 214-yard Hole No. 5, then took a double bogey on the par-4, 414-yard Hole No. 6.

Doggett turned it around recording birdies on three of his next five holes, then on three of his last five to finish with a 2-under 70 to surge into a tie at the top of the leader board.

"You can't really ever count him out," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "There isn't a hole that he can't birdie. He knows when to use his driver and when to lay up. What he can really do is flight the ball. He goes high when he needs to or can go low. He has great control of the game."

Doggett fired three birdies in the opening round on his way to an even-par 72 and is tied with St. Mary's sophomore Sabastian Tannum Donaldson, who carded consecutive 71s.

"He put himself in a great position to win another tournament," Ray said. "You can't say enough about him."

Doggett helped the Mustangs compile a 7-over team total of 295 in the opening before going for a 10-over 298 in the second to tie defending NCAA Division II champion Arkansas Tech for fourth with a 17-over, 36-hole total of 593.

MSU trails three Lone Star Conference in St. Mary's (581/+5), Texas A&M-Commerce (586/+10) and Cameron (590/+14).

"This shows the strength of our conference," Ray said. "That's what makes this league fun. We finished very well in the second round. We fought hard. We didn't play great, but we hung in there and gave ourselves a chance to win. I expect us to play really well tomorrow."

Junior Jake Leatherwood delivered scores with a 73 and 75 to tie for 16th with a 4-over total of 148. The Snyder native recorded a team-best 25 pars and went 4-under on the course's four par-5s. Leatherwood also provided the team's highlight with an eagle on the par-5, 528-yard Hole No. 7.

Junior Garrett Leek logged four birdies on the way to an opening round 73. The Brock native followed with a 78 in the second to tie for 31st with a 7-over, 36-hole total of 151.

Sophomore Ethen Wolf recorded a pair of countable scores in his first team competition rounds. The Gillette, Wyoming native carded tallies of 77 and 76 to tie for 40th with a 9-over 153.

Junior Mason Mikeska logged matching 77s to tie for 44th with a 10-over total of 154.

The final round of the Rattler Invitational begins with a shotgun start Tuesday at 8:15 a.m.
