EDMOND, Okla. -- Midwestern State had a hard-fought battle against No. 3 University of Central Oklahoma on Saturday night. The Mustangs managed to take points from
Casie Curry and
Skylar Minns' singles wins, but eventually fell 2-5 to the top-ranked Bronchos. MSU holds a three-match losing streak and is 2-3 on the season.
Emilija Visic and
Anda Ghinga fell to the ITA Cup champions, Mae and Christine Canete, in the opening doubles round. The top line saw a clean 6-0 sweep of the Mustang duo. Visic and Ghinga are 2-3 from the No. 1 spot on the season.
Minns and
Sydney Williams recorded their second loss at the third doubles line to Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar. The match went 6-1 in favor of UCO.
Adel Abidullina and Tizia Brocks collected the final doubles win for the Bronchos. They defeated Curry and
Hannah Yip by 6-0 at the second doubles spot. Curry and Yip are now 1-1 with their win coming against Tyler Junior College on Friday.
Williams tabbed her second loss at the hands of Brocks at the No. 5 singles. The freshman fell 1-6, 2-6 after grabbing three straight wins in the Mustangs' first three matches of the season.
Yip, who is ranked seventh in the region, fell by 6-0, 6-1 to No. 4 in the nation, Christine Canete. Yip is 2-3 at the second singles spot on the year.
Kyndall Quiroz was the next to fall as the No. 19 ranked region Mustang tallied a 1-6, 1-6 score against No. 5 nationally ranked Abidullina. After Quiroz's comeback win against Tyler JC, the sophomore is 2-2 from the No. 3 spot.
Though she ranks ninth in the South Central Region, Ghinga had a tough time against the No. 2 nationally ranked Mae Canete at the top singles line. The Broncho earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory to put Ghinga at 2-3 for the season.
Minns tabbed her victory over Buntrock at the No. 6 spot with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 comeback. The sophomore holds the best singles record of the Mustangs thus far, going 4-1 through the first five matches.
In her second singles match of the season, Curry donned a 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 score over No. 21 Grace Chadick. Curry is 2-0 at the No. 4 spot for MSU.
Midwestern State returns to play next week with two road matches at Collin College and Southeastern Oklahoma. MSU and CC face-off at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25 at the Collin College Tennis Courts in Plano, Texas. The Mustangs and the Storm battle at the Southeastern Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 26. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Durant, Okla.
