Mustangs start well in exhibition at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas --  Natalie Stice scored 14 points and had two of 13 steals for Midwestern State at United Supermarkets Arena, but Texas Tech pulled away in the second half for an 84-50 victory in the exhibition game.

The Red Raiders led MSU at the end of the first quarter, 13-10, and only led 26-22 at intermission.

Midwestern grabbed 22 rebounds in the first half, just one less than Texas Tech in the opening 20 minutes.

Rhyle Mckinney hit a 3-point shot 24 seconds into the third quarter and set the second-half tone for Texas Tech, which outscored the Mustangs in the period, 30-13. The Red Raiders hit 5-of-7 shots from 3-point range in the third period. Mckinney was 3-of-4 from 3-point range and finished with a game-high 19 points.

Texas Tech shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the field and finished 10-of-17 from beyond the arc.

Yasmine Sifaoui led Midwestern State with five rebounds. The Mustangs pulled down 34 boards as a team.

Texas Tech had 43 rebounds, led by Ella Tofaeono, who had 11 rebounds for the Red Raiders.

Midwestern shot 27 percent from the field overall, hitting 16-of-60 shots and just 2-of-20 from 3-point distance.

Sifaoui scored eight points for the Mustangs, who were 16-of-20 from the free-throw line. Mandy Withey pitched in seven points and pulled down four rebounds.

Jordan Mathis scored six points, hitting 4-of-5 free throws. The Mustangs were 16-of-20 as a team at the foul line.

Midwestern State tips off the 2022-23 regular season at Plachy Hall in Alamosa, Colorado, for a matchup with Adams State on Friday, Nov. 11. The season opener gets underway at 6:30 p.m. CST. The following day MSU visits UC Colorado Springs and tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.
