PORTALES, N.M. -- Freshman Ben Sauerlander scored in a 43rd minute and Eastern New Mexico stunned No. 8-ranked Midwestern State 1-0 Wednesday night at Greyhound Stadium.
The Greyhounds improved to 4-3-1 by winning a home opener a month in the making, while MSU fell for the second straight match to drop to 6-2-2.
The Mustangs controlled a 60-40 edge in possession time resulting in a 16-6 advantage in shots.
Eastern New Mexico goalkeeper Paul Waschkau was up to the task recording five saves to claim his second clean sheet of the season.
The Greyhounds won for just the fourth time in 30 meetings with Midwestern State, but have now won the last two matchups played in Portales. ENMU, which revived soccer after a two year hiatus this season, also defeated MSU 2-1 in 2019.
Midwestern State was whistled for 21 fouls with 14 coming in the first half. The match featured nine bookings with five cautions shown to the Greyhounds, who committed a total of 13 fouls.
