DALLAS -- Freshman
Tristan Gabbard fired her fifth par-or-better round and junior transfer
Madison Brown was solid in her Midwestern State debut over the opening two rounds of the West Region Preview Monday at The Golf Club of Dallas.
The Mustangs overcame a sluggish start to settle in at sixth on the team leader board through 36 holes amassing team scores of 305 and 295 for a 24-over total of 600.
"I was proud of them," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "The regional preview always has a great field. A couple of teams have separated themselves, but we're at the level behind them."
Gabbard shook off an opening round 77 by logging birdies on three par-4s and another on the par-5 18th hole to finish with a 2-under 70 in the second circuit. The Fulshear native now has five par-or-better scores in her first eight rounds of collegiate golf.
Gabbard is tied for 13th with a 3-over total of 147 and is eight strokes off the pace of tournament leader Julia Garcia (65-74 139/-5) of Dallas Baptist.
Meanwhile, Brown was solid in her first tournament for MSU logging 26 pars finishing strong in the second round with four birdies to finish with scores of 75 and 73 for a 4-over 148 to tie for 15th.
"Madison is a very capable golfer," Ray said. "She didn't qualify for the first two tournament, so this shows the type of depth we have. Neither Madison nor Tristan hit the ball great today, but they grinded. Their short game was impressive and they putted well."
Sophomore
Brecklyn Flanagan fired a pair of 76s to tie for 29th with an 8-over total of 152, while freshman
Kodi Nolen fired scores of 77 and 76 for a 9-over total of 153 to tie for 33rd.
Senior
Beatrice Perucchini marked a pair of 80 to tie for 67th with a 16-over total of 160, while sophomore
Makenna Henry tied for 49th playing as an individual medalist only with scores of 77 and 79 for a 12-over total of 156.
"It takes a lot of concentration and fighting through being tired to play 36 holes in a day. We had determination and fought for a reasonable score. That is a good sign," Ray said. "We're making strides in the right direction. Our best rounds are ahead of us."
Dallas Baptist (285-290) tops the leader board with a 1-under, 36-hole total of 575 and will carry a seven-stroke lead over West Texas A&M (288-294 582/+6) in Tuesday's final round.
"We got off to a bad start," Ray said. "You have to play 54 holes of golf to be good at these tournaments. We are young, but these are the types of tournaments you want to play in. You see firsthand that this where you want to be."
The round of the West Regional Preview begins with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8:30.
