Leek goes low at The Hrnciar Invitational

DUNCAN, Okla. -- It's all about what might have been for Garrett Leek at The Jerry Hrnciar Invitational Tuesday afternoon at The Territory Golf Club.

The senior from Brock was on fire in the tournament's final round marking seven birdies and a single bogey on his way to a 6-under 66. The score would have placed him in a three-way playoff with an opportunity to claim his fifth career individual win after carding an apparent even-par 72 in the opening round and a 2-under 70 in the second.

But Leek failed to confirm a score was marked in the final hole of the opening round and signed an illegal scorecard resulting in disqualification.

"Garrett had a great day," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "He hit 17 greens in regulation and was in control of his game today."

Oklahoma Christian's Alejandro Armijo (75-63-70 208/-8) claimed individual medalist honors winning a one-hole playoff over Cameron's Trevor Mierl (70-67-71 208/-8).

Still, Leek continued his climb to the top of several major career charts at MSU. He ended the fall semester with 67 career par-or-better rounds which is just five behind former teammate Jake Doggett, who post 72 par-or-better scores from 2018-22.

Leek also added nine birdies to his collegiate count and now has 411 which is 10 behind Doggett for MSU's career lead.

His efforts helped the Mustangs fire a 2-over 290 as a team in the final round as Midwestern finished sixth overall with a 13-over, 54-hole total of 877.

Oklahoma Christian also claimed the team title firing a 19-under total of 845 to finish ahead of Cameron (860/-4), West Texas A&M (873/+9), Wayland Baptist (874/+10), Dallas Baptist (876/+12), and Midwestern State.

The Mustangs received a pair of stellar efforts from their second team which finished eighth with a 32-over total of 896.

Junior Ethen Wolf carded scores of 73, 68, and 75 for an even-par 216 to tie for ninth, while redshirt-freshman Seth Bearden tied for 18th by logging consecutive even-par 72s following a 77 in the opening round for a 54-hole, 5-over total of 221.

"It's hard to know who to take to a tournament right now," Ray said. "We'll just have to go with who is playing best at that time. We're just looking for a little more consistency out of five guys."

Senior Mason Mikeska (76-71-74 221/+5) tied for 18th, while junior Keaton Dickens (73-72-78 223/+7) tied for 25th.

Senior Jake Leatherwood marked scores of 74, 75, and 77 to tie for 32nd with a 10-over total of 226, while junior Robert Garcia (76-78-73 227/+11) tied for 35th.

Junior Ethan Dean put up a third solid effort the second team recovering from an opening round 81 to fire consecutive even-par 72. He tied for 29th with a 9-over total of 225.

Midwestern State closed the fall portion of the schedule with a pair of runner-up team finishes at West Texas A&M's Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational and at the MSU Invitational.
