ALBUQUERQUE -- Midwestern State's
Garrett Leek was at his best under difficult conditions in the final of the RJGA South Central Shootout Tuesday afternoon at UNM's Championship Course.
The junior from Brock hit 15 of 18 greens and 11 of 14 fairways in regulation on his way to posting the lowest score of the third round.
"The putting was difficult and the greens were very fast and undulated," MSU assistant coach
Brad Corley said. "The conditions were about as tough as they could get."
Still, Leek went par over his first nine holes before hitting one of his patented runs.
He converted a birdie on the par-3, 166-yard Hole No. 3 and carded another birdie on the par-4, 379-yard Hole No. 4 before notching a third birdie during a four-hole stretch with another on the par-4, 423-yard Hole No. 6.
"He hit some darts in there and got really close and hit some putts," Corley said. "He played well all day. Birdying No. 3 gave him some momentum."
It was Leek's 14th collegiate Top 10 finish, but he had plenty of backup as the Mustangs claimed their second consecutive team runner-up finish.
MSU fired rounds of 296, 288 and 299 for a 19-over total of 883 to finish behind Colorado State-Pueblo, who recorded tallies of 283, 286 and 288 for a 7-under 857.
"They were phenomenal with what they shot," Corley said.
Jake Doggett continued his stellar run by recording his sixth-straight Top 10 individual finish and eighth in his last nine competitions.
The senior from Hutto carded scores of 75, 68 and 76 to tie for seventh with a 3-over total of 219, while junior
Jake Leatherwood tied for 14th logging tallies of 73, 74 and 74 for a 5-over 221.
Senior
Keiton Hoster (76-75-79 230/+14) and junior
Mason Mikeska (79-73-80 232/+16) tied for 50th and 60th places, respectively.
Colorado State-Pueblo sophomore Matt Millar (71-68-71) claimed individual medalist honors to a 6-under total of 210 to win by a single stroke over Colorado Christian's Adam Duncan (69-70-72).
Midwestern State competes in the 2021 Farmers Insurance Sam Proal West/South Central Region Preview on Oct. 4-5 at the Pueblo (Colo.) Country Club.
