DuPONT, Washington -- Midwestern State needed a big push to earn a shot to realize a national team berth Friday in the NCAA Division II West/South Central Region Championship on The Home Course.
The Mustangs never grasped the greatly needed momentum and head into Saturday's final round mired in 14th place logging tallies of 301 and 303 to stand 21 strokes behind leading Oklahoma Christian at 28-over par.
Instead,
Jake Doggett carries MSU's national hopes into the final 18 holes. The junior from Hutto is tied for fourth after carding scores of 72 and 71 for a 1-under total of 13.
He is three strokes back of leading Andrew Ni of Colorado State-Pueblo (70-70 140/-4) and a single stroke behind Texas A&M-Commerce's Zach Burch (73-69 142/-2) and Sonoma State's Thomas Jenkins (70-72 142/-2).
The top four teams and highest finishing individual not on those squads advance to NCAA Division II Championships from May 17-22 at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Oklahoma Christian surged 10 spots to the top of the team leaderboard after firing a 1-under 287 in the second round. The Eagles' 36-hole tally of 583 (+7) gives them a two-stroke leader over Saint Martin's (585/+9) and Colorado State-Pueblo (585/+9) heading into the final round.
Texas A&M-Commerce holds the fourth and final advancing spot with a 10-over, two-round tally of 286 just ahead of Sonoma State (590/+14), Western Washington (592/+16) and Montana State-Billings (592/+16).
That means -- assuming no changes in the top four -- Doggett is just one stroke behind Jenkins in the battle for individual advancement.
MSU sophomore
Garrett Leek fired a 1-over 73 in the second round to move into a tie for 21st place with a two round total of 148 (+4), while
Kolton Baber logged a 7-over 79 to tie for 72nd with a 36-hole tally of 156 (+12).
Junior
Keiton Hoster finished strong with an even-par showing on his final 11 holes to deliver the Mustangs' final countable score with a 8-over 80. He is 84th with a two-round total of 162 (+18).
Senior
Conrad Rafferty carded a 9-over 81 to move into a tie for 80th with a 36-hole total of 158 (+14).
