OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Lone Star Conference opponents, Midwestern State (3-2) and Oklahoma Christian (0-3), face-off on Thursday, Dec. 2. OC hosts the non-conference slate at Payne Athletic Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
SCOUTING THE LADY EAGLES
Oklahoma Christian dropped all three of its opening games for the season, including two at home against Champion Christian and Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Lady Eagles allowed the highest average points in the Lone Star Conference through their three matches. Brooklyn Bain leads OC on multiple fronts, including her LSC best 11.7 rebounds per game average. The freshman guard also ranks seventh in the conference with a 0.500 field goal percent and 16.3 points per game. Bain scores 15.7 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field. Kate Bradley is close behind with 15.3 points per game, earning tenth in the Lone Star Conference. The freshman guard averages 4.7 rebounds and leads the Lady Eagles with four steals. Bradley ranks sixth in the LSC with 3.7 assists per game. Kendall Blackburn pulls down 8.3 rebounds per game to rank fifth in the LSC and is seventh in the league blocking 1.3 shots per game. The junior center is 10-for-11 from the free throw line.Oklahoma Christian allows 80.3 points per game – the most in the Lone Star Conference.
SCORING AND BLOCKING
Midwestern State continues its sharp shooting from the floor as they clinch third in the LSC with a 0.444 field goal percent.
Hannah Reynolds helps this front, also claiming third in the conference with her 0.548 percent. The senior posted 53 points to average 13.3 per game.
Frances King ranks sixth draining 30 of 60 attempts. The sophomore guard sits fourth in the LSC with 17.8 points per game. Her total stands at 89 points to lead the Mustangs.
The Mustangs' also boost in the blocking category, ranking second in the conference with an average five blocks per game. Individually, Reynolds holds the same place with 2.3 slaps per game. Overall, the forward holds nine blocks.
GIVES AND TAKES
Morgan Lenahan is second in the LSC with 2.8 steals per game. The senior is eighth in the league hitting 86.4 percent of her attempts at the free throw line. Lenahan is 19 of 22 from the line to add to her 9.6 point per game average. King owns 2.4 average takes to sit fourth in the Lone Star Conference. Building on her 72 helpers from the 2020-21 season, King leads the Mustangs with 23 assists. Her average of 4.6 ranks second in the conference. Last year, the guard finished third in the LSC and ranked 53rdd in NCAA Division II with her total gives.
HEAD COACH CHRISTOPHER REAY is in his second season at the helm of his alma mater. In the shortened COVID 2020-21 season and his first year at the reins, Reay guided the Mustangs to an 11-7 overall record while going 11-5 in Lone Star Conference play. The team finished fifth in the standings and reached the quarterfinals in the postseason tournament. In addition, Reay led MSU to a 4-6 mark over the final 10 games in 2019-20 serving in an interim role following
Noel Johnson's leave of absence to continue her fight against ovarian cancer. His career coaching record stands at 18-15 (.545). Reay served as the top assistant for 10 campaigns, playing a hand in guiding MSU to three consecutive NCAA Division II South Central Regionals from 2012-15 as MSU claimed a Lone Star Conference regular and postseason tournament titles in 2012-13. Reay competed two seasons at Midwestern State in 2006-07 and 2007-08 after transferring from SMU helping MSU to an LSC postseason tournament championship and a regional semifinal appearance in 2007.
ABOUT THE SERIES
In the short, but long-spanning series between Midwestern State and Oklahoma Christian, OC owns a 9-7 advantage over MSU. The two teams first faced-off in 1979 when the Mustangs took the first win over the Eagles. Midwestern State only claimed one victory in Panye Athletic Center, which was the first of two match-ups in 2021.
Morgan Lenahan and
Frances King dropped 15 and 12 points each in the 67-60 victory. The Mustangs dropped the next day's game against the Eagles by 49-65. Thursday's game is big for this season because either it will be MSU's first road win or OC's first home W.
UP NEXT
More than a week later, Midwestern State hits the road again to face another Lone Star Conference foe in UAFS. Though the game does not count for LSC play, the two teams face-off on Friday, Dec. 10. Stubblefield Center will host the match with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
