PUEBLO, Colo. -- Three fall tournaments down for Midwestern State. And now three runner-up showings for the Mustangs.
Junior
Garrett Leek blistered the course at the Pueblo Country Club for a 4-under 67 on his way to a his 14th collegiate top five finish, while seniors
Jake Doggett and
Keiton Hoster also finished in the top 10 Tuesday in the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational.
"We would sure like to win one," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "This was a great field. Once we get everyone on the same page and playing well, we are going to win some tournaments."
Midwestern State followed Monday's 6-under team total of 278 with a 3-under 281 to close 9-under with a 559 but were undone by an exceptional performance from Oklahoma Christian.
OC junior Alejandro Armijo claimed individual medalist honors firing scores of 68 and 66 for an 8-under 135 to lead the Eagles to team tallies of 274 and 277 to top the team leaderboard by eight strokes with a 17-under 551.
MSU also claimed second-place finishes at the Bob Writz Invitational in Lakewood, Colo. and in the RJGA South Central Shootout in Albuquerque earlier this fall.
"We still have not really played great as a team with all five guys," Ray said.
Leek posted four birdies and eagled the par-5, 555-yard 11th hole during the final round to stand at 6-under before taking bogeys on the final two holes to post a 67 after firing a 70 in the opening round.
He has posted five par-or-better scores in nine tournament rounds this season.
"Garrett really had it going. He has a unique ability to see lines on the green," Ray said. "The greens were crazy fast today. If you were on the wrong side of the green, you were probably going to make a bogey."
Doggett continued his amazing run of consistency posting his seventh consecutive Top 10 individual finish carding scores of 68 and 70 for a 4-under total of 138. The Hutto native has finished in the Top 10 at 23 of his 30 collegiate tournaments.
"Jake had another great tournament," Ray said. "He was exceptional from tee-to-green."
Hoster matched Doggett stroke for stroke to also tie for sixth with matching scores and a 4-under 138 total. The senior from Weatherford, Texas has now authored three Top 10 finishes as a collegian.
"Keiton had a great tournament," Ray said. "He was under control. He chipped the ball very well around the green and was great off of the tee. He chipped and putted the ball better under tough conditions than he has since he has been here."
Junior
Mason Mikeska tied for 49th carding scores of 75 and 72 for a 5-over 147, while junior
Jake Leatherwood logged tallies of 76 and 74 for an 8-over 150 to tie for 72nd.
The Mustangs host the Midwestern State Invitational Monday and Tuesday at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
"I am very excited about this group," Ray said. "We are looking forward to our tournament next week."
