Doggett delivers historic performance, Mustangs win MSU Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Jake Doggett was nothing short of sensational in the final round Tuesday at the Midwestern State Invitational.

With the wind blowing at 20-25 miles per hour, the senior from Hutto continued his mastery of the Wichita Falls Country Club course going bogey free with six birdies for a 6-under par 65.

The score matched his lowest round of the tournament with Doggett carding tallies of 65, 68 and 65 to set an MSU program low, 54-hole total with a 15-under 198 to claim his third collegiate win.

"Jake was just impressive," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "It was a tough day to play golf and he shot a 65. That's one of the most impressive rounds ever played in our tournament. He has so much confidence and he is fun to watch right now."

The Mustangs finally claimed their first team tournament win of the season after settling for runner-up finishes in the opening three tournaments of the fall.

MSU logged red totals in all three rounds with a 281, 278 and 279 for a 14-under tally of 838 to beat Hutchinson JC by 10 strokes. It is Midwestern State's first team victory since winning the UT Tyler Fall Invitational in 2020.

Doggett's 54-hole mark of 198 (-15) bettered the program's best mark previously set by former All-American Derek Oland at the 2014 West Florida Argonaut Invitational (203/-13) and twice matched by teammate Garrett Leek at the 2020 RJGA South Central Preview (203/-13) and the 2020 UT Tyler Fall Invitational (203/-10). Jared Baker also logged a 203 (-10) at the 2017 Texas A&M-Commerce Lions Classic.

Junior Jake Leatherwood tied the former low individual tournament score for the MSU Invitational with an 8-under total of 205 marking scores of 69, 69 and 67, but was forced to finish runner-up -- by seven strokes.

"Jake (Leatherwood) played an exceptional tournament that would normally win," Ray said.

Midwestern State golfers five of the top six low individual tournament scores in the event's 12-year history led by Doggett's 15-under total, while Leatherwood matched Leek's winning 8-under tally of 205 set in 2019.

Leek logged his 16th Top 10 collegiate finish by tying for seventh with a 3-under total of 210 with scores of 71, 67 and 72.

Junior Mason Mikeska (76-74-75 225/+12) and senior Keiton Hoster (78-75-78 231/+18) tied for 64th and 91st places, respectively to round out the results for MSU's top team.

Midwestern State also received top performances from its second competition squad as six different Mustangs logged par-or-better scores over the three rounds of competition.

Freshman Ryan Hailey followed an opening round 76 with scores of 69 and 71 to tie for 24th with a 3-over total of 216 which was matched by sophomore Ethen Wolf, who logged tallies of 68, 72 and 76 in his MSU debut.

Sophomore Tyler Kenyon (71-73-79) tied for 51st with a 10-over 223, while J.T. Boyd (76-76-78 230/+17) and Keaton Dickens (80-78-73 231/+18) tied for 89th and 91st, respectively.

Overall, the "B" Team finished 11th with a 27-over team total of 879 marking single rounds scores of 291, 290 and 298.

"You see the depth of our team. We had a few guys struggle on the top team and some play well on the second team," Ray said. "We have a chance to be special when we get the right guys out there."

Sophomores Lane Garcia (77-75-73 225/+12) and Ethan Sanchez (77-73-83 233/+20) tied for 64th and 98th competing as individual medalists only.

Midwestern State wraps up the fall Monday and Tuesday at The Hrnciar Classic played at The Territory Golf Club in Duncan, Okla.
