WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State followed
Jake Doggett's lead by finishing strong Monday evening in the MSU Invitational at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
Doggett followed an opening round 65 with a more than solid 68 to take a four-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round with a 9-under total of 133.
The senior from Hutto takes aim at his third individual win beginning at 9:02 a.m. Tuesday off of Hole No. 1. If Doggett holds on to the four-stroke lead, he will be the sixth men's golfer to win the Midwestern State Invitational joining Santiago Gomez (2013),
Derek Oland (2014), Trip Hobson (2017), Chance Craig (2018) and
Garrett Leek (2019).
Doggett's 9-under total is one shot better than Leek's 8-under 205 set in 2019, while his 6-under 65 is the lowest opening round score in the tournament's 13-year history. It is the third lowest in the total history of the event behind Leek's 63 in 2019. Southern Nazarene's Matthew Wellman fired a 7-under 64 during the second round of the 2014 tournament.
Midwestern State closed strong by going 6-under over the final three holes which were primarily played under a low light setting as the field raced to complete 36 holes on Monday.
Junior
Jake Leatherwood finished with three consecutive birdies to close the second round with a 2-under 69 to match his first round tally. Leatherwood tied for third with a 4-under 138.
Leek carded two of his five second-round birdies in the final three holes to also move into tie for third with a 4-under 138. The Brock native logged scores of 71 and 67.
Junior
