TEMPE, Ariz. - Angel Palacios became the third back-to-back All-American in Midwestern State history and the first singles player to accomplish the feat after garnering All-America honors on Tuesday afternoon as announced by Oracle/ITA officials.
The senior joins Ashley Ramirez (Doubles - 2018 & 2019) and Brett Emerson (Doubles - 2006 & Singles - 2007) as the only repeat All-Americans in school history. Maddy Coffman (Doubles - 2018 & Singles - 2018) remains the only player in program history to be named an All-American in singles and doubles in the same season.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the selection criteria was changed to reflect the significant reduction in matches.
To receive All-America status:
- 2019 ITA Regional Singles and/or Doubles Champion from all 8 regions
- First round Singles and/or Doubles winners from 2019 ITA Cup. Must've won the first round advancing to the quarterfinals NOT a consolation round
- Top 10 Doubles Ranking from unpublished computerized double run of the Oracle ITA Rankings (using 4 countable wins). Doubles teams in the top 10 unpublished computerized double run need a minimum of 5 matches together this fall and/or spring against any division, regardless of whether or not the match finished to be a DII All-American
- Top 20 Singles Ranking from unpublished computerized double run of the Oracle ITA Rankings (using 6 countable wins)
Palacios entered the 2020 season ranked No. 5 in singles and was off to a 7-5 start at the top flight.
Last season, Palacios became the fifth men's tennis player to be named an All-American in Midwestern State history after finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the Oracle/ITA national rankings. Andrew Norman (1985, NAIA), Brett Emerson (2007), Vasudev Vijayaraman (2018), and Palacios (2019, 2020) are the only singles players to earn All-America status while Zac Dillard and Emerson eared the distinction in doubles in 2006.
