Curry leads the charge as Mustangs roll at MSU Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Casie Curry rolled to a pair of titles to lead the charge for the Mustangs at the 9th annual MSU Invitational that wrapped up on Saturday night.

Curry cruised to the flight four singles crown, dispatching Brook Brewer (University of Texas at Tyler), 7-5, 6-1 to reach the finals. In the championship match, the reigning Lone Star Conference freshman of the year dropped Julianne Garcia (Cameron), 6-0, 6-2.

"The women's team improved consistently up and down the line-up in singles, highlighted by Casie winning her flights," said Head Coach Scott Linn

In flight two doubles, the team of Curry and Lea Cizeron dominated, carving their way through Diana Budnik/Elizaveta Tregubova (Southeastern Oklahoma State), 6-2, Pilar Juarena/Julianne Garcia (Cameron), 6-3, and Brewer/Anna Gerletti (University of Texas at Tyler), 6-2 to claim the title. 

Flight one doubles saw the duo of Ashley Ramirez/Emilija Visic post three impressive victories to win the championship. The pair defeated Melany Opolz/Garcia (Cameron), 6-2 and Ethne Dowling/Kim Moosbacher (Oklahoma Baptist), 6-2, before knocking out Logan Morrissey/Svea Crohn (Washburn), 6-4. 

"Doubles was much stronger, with Emi and Ashley winning flight one and Casie and Lea winning flight two. Excited about the opportunity that the ITA Regional presents for this team," added Coach Linn. 

In flight one singles action, Ramirez defeated India Shiaelis (Southeastern Oklahoma State) in a consolation bout, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Visic claimed third place with an impressive flight one showing. After losing to Moosbacher 6-3, 6-0 (Oklahoma Baptist), the freshman slipped past Vasalisa Polunova (Cameron), 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (4). 

MSU had multiple entries in flight two. Emilija Segetlija won a pair of consolation matches on Saturday, defeating Liz Aristizabal (Seward), 7-5, 6-1 and Gabby Llamas (Oklahoma Baptist), 7-6 (4), 6-1 before falling in straight sets to Chloe Chawner (University of Texas at Tyler), 6-4, 6-3. Cizeron suffered a pair of Saturday losses, falling 6-1, 6-4 to Crohn (Washburn) in the semifinals and 6-3, 6-1 to Georgina Kaindoah (Cowley) in the third place bout.

Emily Ineson won a pair of consolation matches in flight three, bouncing Chantal Lozano (Southeastern Oklahoma State) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 and Sydnee Foster (Washburn), 6-3, 6-1.

On the men's side, Angel Palacios won flight one after defeating Bruno Siuama (Oklahoma Baptist), 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7). The senior advanced to the finals with a straight set win over Sander Jans (Seward), 6-3, 6-3.

Alex Martinez Roca was upended in the flight one semifinals by Siuama, 6-2, 6-3 before rebounding to defeat Jans in the third place match, 6-4, 7-5.

In flight two, Brice Bradshaw won a consolation bout over Julen Gutierrez (Cameron), 6-2, 6-2, before ending his afternoon with a three set loss to Manuel Pilotto (Southeastern Oklahoma State), 7-5, 4-6, 10-6. Alberto Diaz-Pineda went 3-0 in the flight two consolations. He upended Matias Le-Ford (Oklahoma Baptist), 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (9) before defeating Stevie Young (University of Texas at Tyler), 6-7 (6), 6-2, 1-0 (8). The junior concluded play with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over Riley Smith (Dallas Baptist).

MSU had a pair of players in flight three. Quentin Scharfenberg lost both his consolation matches, first to Gabe Hidalgo (University of Texas at Tyler), 6-2, 6-2, and then to Jesus Villamizar (Cameron), 6-4, 6-2. Abhi Venkatachalam fell in the quarterfinals to Aaron Brewer (Oklahoma Baptist), 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (7) before earning a win over Jason Roberts (Southeastern Oklahoma State). 

Jean Muniz cruised to the flight four championship. He bested Jose Currea (University of Texas at Tyler), 6-4, 6-4, Tuur Vos (Seward), 6-3, 6-1 and Johan Favelin (Seward), 6-2, 6-4.

In men's doubles, the duo of Palacios and Martinez Roca advanced to the flight one finals. Diaz-Pineda and Scharfenberg won their opening match, 7-6 (1) before suffering setbacks in each of their next two matchups. Venkatachalam/Bradshaw dropped their first doubles match of flight two before rattling off two straight victories. 

"The men's team was much more mentally tough in singles, highlighted by Angel and Jean winning their flights, but also Alex finishing third in flight one and Alberto winning three matches in singles on the second day. In doubles, we did a lot more things right as a team and really committed to playing doubles that will help us against any team in the nation. A great job by Angel and Alex reaching the finals of flight one," added Coach Linn.  

The men return to the court on Friday, October 4 for the first day of the ITA Regional in Wichita Falls, while the women head to Dallas on September 26 for the starts of ITA Regionals.
