WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Emilija Visic and
Angel Palacios highlighted a strong first day for Midwestern State at the 9th annual MSU Invitational on Friday. Play was halted around 6:00 p.m. due to inclement weather and will continue on Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
"Visic is playing at a very high level right now. I'm proud of how she played today," said MSU Head Coach
Scott Linn. The freshman advanced to the semifinals in flight one with a pair of victories. First, she downed Elizaveta Tregubova (Southeastern Oklahoma State), 6-1, 6-2 before defeating Alisa Savino (Cameron) 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10).
Also in flight one,
Ashley Ramirez earned a straight set win in her first round match before falling 6-2, 6-1 to Gaini Ibrasheva (University of Texas at Tyler) to fall into the consolation bracket.
Elsewhere in women's action,
Lea Cizeron powered her way into the flight two semifinals with a pair of straight set wins. "Cizeron was a steady presence on the court today. She showed a lot of patience," added Coach Linn.
Emilija Segelija lost her flight two opening round match 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (6) to Cadence Lynn (Washburn). Emily Ineson suffered a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7) setback to Chloe Dix (University of Texas at Tyler) in flight three.
Casie Curry made it three Mustangs in the semifinals with a resounding 6-0, 6-1 win over Andrea Sanchez (Oklahoma Baptist) in the quarterfinals. Curry received a first round bye.
On the men's side, Palacios and
Alex Martinez Roca advanced to the flight one semifinals. "The duo is competing well right now. They battled out there and came away with some hard earned wins, said Coach Linn.
Brice Bradshaw and Alberto-Diaz Pineda each suffered losses in their first matches of the day in flight two.
In flight three,
Quentin Scharfenberg fell to Henry Zeiders (Washburn) 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (11) while Abhi Venkatachalam advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-0 decision over Jacob Delao (Dallas Baptist).
Jean Muniz slipped past Carlos Vidal (Cameron) 7-6, 6-3 in the opening round of flight four.
The MSU Invitational continues on Saturday morning in Wichita Falls.
