Storylines
First Serve
Midwestern State puts its six-match winning streak on the line as the Mustangs travel to Abilene for a meeting with NCAA DI Abilene Christian on Tuesday at the Eager Tennis Center. First serve against the Wildcats is tabbed for 5 p.m.
Â
Last Time Out
MSU sent its seniors off in style as
Dillon Pineda and
Denney Norrie combined for three wins in Friday's 4-3 win over No. 37-ranked Washburn.
Â
Doubles Decider
The doubles point has proved to be decisive for the Mustangs this season. MSU is 14-1 when grabbing the early edge and 2-2 when falling into a hole.
Â
Title Defense
MSU's April 25 showdown against Cameron serves as the de-facto regular season championship match for the Lone Star Conference. Both teams boast an unbeaten record in LSC play with only their rival on the schedule remaining in conference action.
Â
The Mustangs look to repeat as conference champs for the first time in team history. MSU swept through UTPB (8-1), WNMU (7-2) and Cameron (6-3) last season en-route to the team's first league crown since 2006.
Â
Flipping the Switch
Since falling to St. Edward's, 4-3, the Maroon and Gold have been on a tear in the last six matches. The Mustangs own a 31-5 mark in singles play over that stretch.
Â
MSU has not lost more than three singles matches to a NCAA DII opponent this season
Mustangs Up to No. 20
Midwestern State moved up one spot to No. 20 in the Oracle/ITA National Rankings after back-to-back sweeps of Dallas Baptist and Oklahoma Baptist.
Â
Junior
Angel Palacios remained at No. 2 in the singles rankings while the doubles tandem of sophomore
Alberto Diaz and freshman
Ben Westwick fell from the top 20 to No. 21.
Â
Regional Shakedown
Midwestern State came in at No. 3 in the opening South Central Region rankings released by the NCAA DII Men's Tennis Committee on Wednesday.
Â
MSU, which came in at No. 21 in the Oracle/ITA National Team rankings earlier today, trailed No. 14 Cameron and No. 27 St. Edward's in the regional polls.
Â
The top four teams from the South Central Region will advance to the NCAA Tournament with the top two teams serving as hosts for opening round action May 11-12 at their campus site. The Heartland Conference is the lone league in the region to receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with a required five teams in its conference. Two teams from each of the eight regions will advance to the NCAA Championship site to vie for a national title, May 21-24, at the Sanlando Park Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.
Â
Pineda and Palacios Reach No. 100
Senior
Dillon Pineda became the 12
th member of the 100 win club on April 5 against UT Permian Basin. The Allen native swept Marcos Silva, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 line in singles to reach the milestone.
Â
Pineda owns a 42-33 singles record and 59-32 doubles record in his four-year career at MSU.
Â
Junior
Angel Palacios joined Pineda as the 13
th member of the 100-win club on April 19 with a 6-2 win in doubles over Washburn's Chase Brill and Bradley Eidenmueller to open the doubles competition.
Â
Palacios needs four wins to match Brett Emerson's single-season record of 20 at the No. 1 flight.
