STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- No. 4 Tarleton State will make the move to the NCAA Division I ranks next season and out of the Lone Star Conference.
It wasn't soon enough for Midwestern State.
On the way out, the Texans handed MSU Texas its largest defeat in school history with a 66-7 win at newly renovated Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.
"It was pretty embarrassing. It's hard to explain," MSU coach
Bill Maskill said. "They are a good football and we didn't play the way we are capable of in all phases. We had some opportunities, but we couldn't capitalize on them."
Midwestern State (4-5, 2-4 LSC) now needs to win out to preserve a streak 19 consecutive winning seasons. The Mustangs close with a home game against Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium before trekking to West Texas A&M for the season finale on Nov. 16.
Junior
Bryce Martinez provided the highlights for the Mustangs racing 57 yards on a punt return in the second quarter, then had a 69-yard reception in the third quarter to set up the Mustangs' only score of the day -- a 2-yard run by Jerome Johnson.
The Mustangs were unable to convert chances missing three field goals in the first half and were only 1-of-5 in the red zone.
Tarleton State was more than opportunistic turning MSU's six turnovers into 35 points keyed by big performances from its big three. The Texans' 66 points were also the most allowed by a Midwestern State team in program history.
Daniel McCants ran for 202 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Zamari Manning turned three of his five catches for 129 yards into three touchdowns. Manning became the school's single season and career receiving touchdown leader in the process.
Senior quarterback Ben Holmes completed 14-of-24 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns.
Midwestern State's
Triston Williams completed 10-of-34 passes for 182 yards with four interceptions -- two returned for scores by Tarleton's Prince Robinson (38, 64).
Martinez caught two passes for 76 yards to pace the receiving corps, while returning one punt for 57 yards.
Sophomore
Lazarus Fisher rushed for 65 yards on 19 carries to pace the Mustangs' running attack.
Christian Moore led the defense with 10 tackles and broke up a pass.
Midwestern State takes on Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
