WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Sophomore quarterback
Triston Williams threw two touchdowns and the Midwestern State defense bounced back from their worst showing in school history to hold Western New Mexico to three second half points in a come from behind 28-13 win on senior day at Memorial Stadium.
Prior to the game, Midwestern State honored 16 seniors, including the late Robert Grays. Grays, who was fatally injured in a game two years ago, would have been a senior this season.
Lazarus Fisher highlighted Midwestern State's first scoring drive of the afternoon with a one-yard touchdown run with 5:28 remaining in the first quarter. The 11-play, 82-yard drive was extended by three Western New Mexico penalties, including holding and roughing the passer infractions on the same play that negated a Matthew Macon interception.
WNMU answered on their next drive when junior quarterback CJ Fowler found Joshua Powell in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown. The 15-play, 80-yard scoring drive ate up 5:20.
Western New Mexico took their only lead of the game at 10-7 on an Ignacio Correa 21-yard field goal with 8:53 remaining in the first half.
Late in the half, with MSU still trailing 10-7, Williams found a wide open
Kylan Harrison streaking down the right-side line for a 51-yard score that gave MSU the lead for good.
The Maroon and Gold pushed their lead to 21-10 when Williams connected with
Michael Berry for a 76-yard touchdown with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter. It was Berry's first touchdown of the season.
The visitors closed the gap to 21-13 when Correa hit his second field goal of the afternoon, this one from 32-yards out, with 7:52 left in the fourth quarter.
Quinton Childs capped off the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run with just over four minutes remaining in the game.
One week after surrendering 66 points to rival Tarleton State, Midwestern State's defense forced two turnovers and held Western New Mexico to just 156 yards in the air.
Marcus Wilkerson collected a team-high nine tackles while senior
Tristan Shearman recorded seven tackles.
Melik Owens and
Jovane Parkinson each forced fumbles for an MSU defense that now has 18 takeaways on the season.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 5-5 and can earn their 20th straight winning season next week with a win over West Texas A&M in the season finale.
