Storylines
Cardiac Kids
Midwestern State has kept matches exciting in its first three contests of the regular season. Of the four goals by the Maroon and Gold, three have come in the final 20-seconds of each respective period. Additionally, those three miracle goals have all been to either tie the match or take the lead.
In the season opener, the Mustangs needed just 20-seconds in overtime to win via golden goal as
Madison Williams broke free and
Kelly Cannistra along with
Imani Morlock found her after a pair of one-touches to get the ball at the feet of Williams. The sophomore fired from near the right post to give MSU Texas the win.
Trailing Fort Lewis 2-1 in the final 10 seconds in San Angelo, the Skyhawks were called for a handball in the box. Freshman
Senna Garcia drilled the penalty kick in the upper 90 to force overtime. After the first 10-minute session, the game was called due to lightning in the area.
Following a Colorado State-Pueblo foul in the final minute, sophomore
Micah Wilson drilled the free kick with two seconds left in the first half to send MSU Texas into the locker room tied with the Thunderwolves.
Shot of Youth
In the first three contests of the season, 13 underclassmen have seen action, including five freshmen. Freshmen
Samantha Upton,
Senna Garcia and
Emma Baley have started all three contests for the Maroon and Gold.
Sensational Senna
Freshman
Senna Garcia was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Mustangs to a 1-0-1 record the first week of the season.
The Albuquerque native scored the first goal of the season in her first career collegiate game for the Mustangs in their win over New Mexico Highlands.
The stakes were raised on the freshman's second goal of the weekend. Trailing 2-1 to Fort Lewis, the Skyhawks were called for a handball in the box with 10 seconds to go. Garcia calmly picked up the ball and struck the equalizer into the upper corner of the net to force overtime.
Baley Dropping Dimes
Baley helped the Mustangs to a 1-0-1 record with assists on two of the Mustangs' four goals on opening weekend. The freshman has played all but eight minutes on the backline through the first three games and is currently tied for the LSC lead with two assists.
In the season opener, the Wichita Falls native found fellow freshman
Senna Garcia with a high cross from the right-side to stake MSU Texas to a 1-0 lead over New Mexico Highlands.
Baley picked up her second assist on a corner kick against Fort Lewis, picking up
Avery Lewis on the set piece to grab a 1-0 lead.
