Mustangs open up NCAA play Monday against rival Cameron

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State plays for its fourth-straight NCAA Sweet 16 berth Monday as the 17th-ranked Mustangs take on No. 15 Cameron for the third time this season in a 10 a.m. matchup at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex in Lawton, Okla.
 
MUSTANGS MAKING 16TH NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE
– Midwestern State qualified for its 16th NCAA Tournament since joining the Division II ranks in 1997-98 when the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Selection Committee unveiled the 48-team tournament field Tuesday
– The Mustangs earned the No. 3 seed in the South Central Region and are joined by top seed St. Mary's (Texas), No. 2 seed Cameron and No. 4 St. Edward's (Texas)
– STMU defeated Heartland Conference rival SEU in the South Central Region #1 Championship today to punch its ticket to the NCAA Sweet 16 with a 5-0 victory
– The winner of Monday's regional title match between the Mustangs and the Aggies will move on to face California (Pa.), who was the winner of the Atlantic #1 Championship, Wednesday, May 18 at 12 p.m. (CT) at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver, Colo.
 
MSU IN THE POSTSEASON
– Midwestern State made history last season in the NCAA Tournament with the program's first trip to the Elite Eight following its first win at the championship site with a 5-1 rout of No. 12 California (Pa.) in the Round of 16 in Surprise, Ariz.
– The Mustangs have advanced to the championship site five times in school history with trips in 2000, 2005, 2013, 2014 and 2015
– Midwestern carries a 13-10 record in regional postseason play with 13 trips to the regional final (5-8) while holding a 14-15 overall record in the NCAA Tournament
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
– Midwestern State enters the postseason with an 18-9 season record and a 13-4 mark against regional foes this season to earn one of three at-large postseason bids for the South Central Region (Cameron, St. Edward's)
– Senior Maddie Schorlemmer ranks 33rd in the Oracle/ITA Division II Singles Rankings and second in the South Central Region with a 14-8 dual record and six wins over regionally-ranked opponents playing at the No. 1 position
– Freshman Eirini Kontaki has won five of her last six matches at No. 2 singles for a 15-10 season record and No. 11 regional ranking
– Freshman Greta Lazzarotto has compiled a 15-11 mark as the No. 3 singles player for the Mustangs to rank 18th in the regional rankings
– Lazzarotto also leads MSU in doubles wins this season with a 24-3 (.889) mark playing on courts two and three, currently tied for the single-season school record for winning percentage while needing just two wins to tie the single-season wins record
– Sophomore Amy Clifton has posted a 4-6 record playing at No. 4 this season since senior Lauren Pineda was sidelined with a season-ending knee injury in mid-April
– Senior Lindsay Nochowicz has recorded a 12-6 mark for the Mustangs playing at No. 5 while junior Abby White leads MSU in wins with an 18-4 record at the bottom slot
– Schorlemmer and Clifton join Lazzarotto with 20 wins in doubles play this season with Schorlemmer coming in with a 23-4 mark playing with Lazzarotto and White while Clifton has recorded a 20-3 slate with Pineda and Lazzarotto
 
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
– Cameron is making its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance with four regional titles and an 11-16 overall record in the postseason
– The Aggies are 21-3 on the season after claiming their first Lone Star Conference Championship with a win over Midwestern State last weekend in Wichita Falls
– Junior Paula Gutierrez, ranked 18th in the ITA singles rankings and first in the region, carries a seven-match win streak into the NCAA Tournament to sit at 15-3 on the season at the No. 1 position
– Senior Alina Gorina ranks fifth in the South Central Region with an 18-3 dual record playing at No. 2 singles for the Aggies
– Freshman Zhenia Shviadok ties for the team lead in wins with a 19-3 mark at No. 3 to rank 15th in the region
– Senior Angie Torres also makes an appearance in the regional rankings at No. 20 with a 17-4 record playing at No. 4
– At the bottom of the lineup, sophomore Samantha Wood is on an 11-match winning streak with a 19-2 mark playing No. 5 while sophomore Mathilde Thibaudat is 17-3 on the season on court six
– In doubles, the duo of Gorina and Shviadok top the regional poll and come in at No. 15 in the country with a 19-4 mark playing at the top spot this season, entering Monday on a 12-match win streak
– Head coach James Helvey has led the Aggies to winning seasons in each of his 15 campaigns with the women's tennis program
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Cameron carries a 26-22-1 edge in the all-time series against Midwestern State, snapping a four-match losing streak to the Mustangs with a pair of wins this season
– The Aggies pulled out a 5-4 thriller against MSU last month in Wichita Falls before claiming the LSC Championship last weekend with a 5-2 triumph at the MSU Tennis Center
– Cameron is 1-0 against the Mustangs in postseason play, earning a 5-3 win at the 2011 NCAA South Central #1 Championship in Lawton
– Midwestern has won three-straight matches at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex since falling to the Aggies in the 2011 regional final including a pair of wins in 2015
 
MSU PLACES LEAGUE-BEST SIX ON ALL-LSC TEAMS
Maddie Schorlemmer and Eirini Kontaki highlighted a league-high six All-Lone Star Conference selections for Midwestern State as announced by league officials Thursday
– The duo earned All-LSC First Team Singles honors while Schorlemmer was named the LSC Sportsmanship Player of the Year and Kontaki was tabbed the LSC Co-Freshman of the Year
Greta Lazzarotto also earned singles recognition with an honorable mention selection
– In doubles, Lindsay Nochowicz joined Kontaki on the All-LSC First Team Doubles while Amy Clifton and Lauren Pineda were named to the honorable mention team
– Cameron's Paula Gutierrez repeated as the LSC Player of the Year while James Helvey captured LSC Coach of the Year honors
– CU's Alina Gorina was named the LSC Newcomer of the Year while Zhenia Shviadok shared freshman of the year honors with Kontaki
– Cameron and Tarleton State each placed four players on the all-conference teams while Texas A&M-Kingsville totaled three
 
MUSTANGS JUMP THREE SPOTS TO 17TH IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
– Midwestern State continued its climb up the Oracle/ITA Division II national team rankings on Apr. 27 as the Mustangs earned a season-best ranking of No. 17 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
– In the national singles rankings, senior Maddie Schorlemmer made her third-straight appearance coming in at No. 33

SENIORS MAKING MOST OF FINAL SEASON
– Seniors Lauren Pineda and Maddie Schorlemmer will both end their Midwestern State careers as two of the top wins leaders in program history, having already reached 100 wins while donning the Maroon and Gold 
– Pineda became the seventh Mustang in program history to earn career win No. 100 on Mar. 13 after a pair of victories over Colorado Mesa while Schorlemmer accomplished the feat on Apr. 6 with two wins over Tarleton State
– Pineda climbed into sole possession of fifth on the all-time wins list following two wins over Dallas Baptist on Apr. 2
– The Allen native sits with a 118-43 career record (.733) with a 70-26 doubles mark and 48-17 singles record to rank fourth on the doubles wins list and seventh in singles
– Schorlemmer moved into sixth on the all-time list last weekend after a doubles win over Cameron in the LSC Championship, currently carrying a record of 112-39 (.742)
– The Argyle native is sixth in career doubles wins at MSU with a 65-18 record while ranking ninth in singles with a 47-21 mark
– Lacey Wuthrich is the all-time wins leader at MSU, compiling a 138-44 record from 2002-05
– Wuthrich is followed by Emilee Black (135-47) and Brooke Gray (131-64), who both played for Midwestern State from 2000-03, and Sara Butler (129-27), who set the school record for winning percentage (.827) from 1999-2002
– Rounding out the 100-win club is Marsha Meyer (111-79), who suited up for the then-Lady Indians from 1998-2001, and Taylor Coffman (100-72), who played from 2012-15
 
LINN EARNS WIN NO. 400
– Head coach Scott Linn received a memorable win No. 400 last May when the MSU women's tennis team upset No. 12 California (Pa.) in the NCAA Sweet 16
– Linn is in his sixth season leading the MSU men's and women's tennis programs, guiding the Mustangs to a combined nine postseason appearances since taking over the programs in 2010-11
– Linn has posted a 94-44 record (.681) with the men's team while recording a 101-49 mark (.673) with the women for a combined 195-93 (.677)
– Since 1997-98, Linn has compiled a 434-272 (.615) career record in 16 seasons as a men's head coach (236-154, .605) and 13 seasons as a women's coach (198-118, .627), averaging close to 15 wins a season
– Prior to MSU, Linn served head coaching stints at Science & Arts. (Okla.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and Florida Southern while serving as a men's assistant coach at his alma mater, East Central (Okla.), and Indiana
