Mustangs set to battle pair of nationally-ranked NJCAA teams

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 20 Midwestern State begins a three-match homestand Friday when the Mustangs host NJCAA opponents Collin College (Texas) and Seward County (Kan.) at the MSU Tennis Center.
 
The Mustangs begin the day taking on the 13th-ranked Cougars from Collin at 10 a.m. before facing the No. 4 Lady Saints of Seward County at 3 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
– Midwestern State opened up Lone Star Conference play Wednesday in Stephenville, coming away with an 8-1 win over Tarleton State
– Senior Maddie Schorlemmer highlighted the day for the Mustangs, becoming the eighth player in MSU women's tennis history to reach 100 career wins
– The Argyle native posted her 100th career victory in doubles play with partner Greta Lazzarotto before earning a straight-set win in singles play
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
– Midwestern State enters the weekend with a 12-5 record on the season and 10-3 mark against NCAA Division II opponents
– Schorlemmer climbed to No. 27 in the new set of national singles rankings released on Mar. 23, sporting an 11-5 dual play record with a 10-4 mark at No. 1 this season
– The duo of senior Lindsay Nochowicz and freshman Eirini Kontaki also appeared in the latest national rankings, moving in at No. 23 in doubles and third in the region with a 10-5 record on the year
– Senior Lauren Pineda leads the Mustangs with a 12-2 record in singles while teaming up with sophomore Amy Clifton to rank sixth in the region as MSU's No. 2 doubles team with a 13-2 mark
– Freshman Greta Lazzarotto, ranked 14th in the South Central Region, is 11-6 on the season in singles, primarily appearing on courts two and three
– Schorlemmer and Lazzarotto round out the doubles lineup for the Mustangs, having won eight-straight matches to carry a team-best 15-2 record
– Kontaki, ranked 17th in the region, hold a 9-6 record on courts two and three this season
– Pineda has been solid for the Mustangs at the No. 4 line, posting an 8-2 record at that position
– Junior Abby White is 4-0 at No. 5 and 6-1 at No. 6 on the season while Nochowicz is 9-2 overall with a 5-2 record at No. 5
 
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
– Collin College is ranked 13th in the NJCAA rankings with a 6-7 record on the season
– The Cougars sport three players ranked in the top 50 in the national singles rankings
– Taryn Swanepoel is the highest-ranked player for the Cougars, earning a No. 28 ranking with a 5-3 record as the No. 5 player
– At No. 2 singles, Juliana Hess has earned No. 31 national ranking with a 5-5 season record for the Cougars
– Natalie Landa also appears in the national rankings at No. 46 with a 6-6 mark at Nos. 3 and 4
– Martin Berryman has led the Collin College men's and women's tennis teams to a 227-182 record (.555) since starting the programs back in 1989
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State is 4-1 overall and 1-0 at home in the all-time series against Collin College
– The two teams last squared off on Feb. 27, 2007 with the Mustangs earning a 6-3 victory in Wichita Falls
– Collin recorded its lone win in the series back on Mar. 26, 1998 with a 5-3 win in Plano
 
SCOUTING THE LADY SAINTS
– Ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA national poll, Seward County is 17-3 this season but has dropped its last two matches to top-10 opponents
– Mialiniana Rakotondrazafy is 11-4 at the No. 1 singles position for the Lady Saints, sporting a No. 15 national ranking
– Nthabi Mogopodi is 12-5 on the season to rank 28th nationally, primarily playing at No. 4 singles for Seward County
– Head coach Greg Owen is in his first season leading the Seward County tennis programs

INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State carries a 2-0 series advantage coming into Friday's matchup with Seward County
– The teams met during the 1991 and 1995 seasons with both contests being played in Wichita Falls

MUSTANGS JUMP TO NO. 20 IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
– Midwestern State climbed two spots to No. 20 in the Oracle/ITA Women's Division II national rankings released Mar. 23 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
– The Mustangs also stayed at No. 3 in the latest South Central Region rankings released on Mar. 16, coming in behind No. 12 St. Mary's and No. 17 Cameron
 
SENIORS MAKING MOST OF FINAL SEASON
– Four-year seniors Lauren Pineda and Maddie Schorlemmer will both leave Midwestern State among the top wins leaders in program history, having reached 100 career wins in their final seasons wearing the Maroon and Gold
– Pineda became the seventh Mustang in program history to earn career win No. 100 after a pair of victories over Colorado Mesa on Mar. 13 while Schorlemmer accomplished the feat on Apr. 6 with two wins over Tarleton State
– Pineda climbed into sole possession of fifth on the all-time wins list following two wins over Dallas Baptist last weekend in Arlington
– The Allen native currently sits with a 113-42 career record (.729) with a 67-26 doubles mark and 46-16 singles record to rank fourth on the doubles wins list and eighth in singles
– Schorlemmer moved into seventh on the all-time wins list after eclipsing the 100-win plateau Wednesday, currently carrying a record of 101-34 (.748)
– The Argyle native is eighth in career doubles wins at MSU with a 57-16 record while ranking ninth in singles with a 44-18 mark
– The duo have also each claimed two Lone Star Conference Player of the Week honors this season with Pineda earning back-to-back nods on Mar. 10 and 17 and Schorlemmer earning the accolade on Mar. 30 and Apr. 7
– Lacey Wuthrich is the all-time wins leader at MSU, compiling a 138-44 record from 2002-05
– Wuthrich is followed by Emilee Black (135-47) and Brooke Gray (131-64), who both played for Midwestern State from 2000-03, and Sara Butler (129-27), who set the school record for winning percentage (.827) from 1999-2002
– Rounding out the 100-win club is Marsha Meyer (111-79), who suited up for the then-Lady Indians from 1998-2001, and Taylor Coffman (100-72), who played from 2012-15
 
LINN EARNS WIN NO. 400
– Head coach Scott Linn received a memorable win No. 400 last May when the MSU women's tennis team upset No. 12 California (Pa.) in the NCAA Sweet 16
– Linn enters his sixth season leading the MSU men's and women's tennis programs, guiding the Mustangs to a combined seven postseason appearances since taking over the programs in 2010-11
– Linn has posted an 88-40 record (.688) with the men's team while recording an 95-45 mark (.679) with the women for a combined 183-85 (.683)
– Since 1997-98, Linn has compiled a 422-264 (.615) career record in 15 seasons as a men's head coach (230-150, .605) and 12 seasons as a women's coach (192-114, .627), averaging close to 15 wins a season
– Prior to MSU, Linn served head coaching stints at Science & Arts. (Okla.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and Florida Southern while serving as a men's assistant coach at his alma mater, East Central (Okla.), and Indiana

– Midwestern State closes out its homestand Monday at 2 p.m. with a top-20 showdown and Lone Star Conference matchup against No. 17 Cameron at the MSU Tennis Center
