LAWTON, Okla. – Redshirt freshman pitcher
Peyton Helton struck out 10 batters while junior left fielder
Taylor Bermudes and freshman shortshop
Makenzi Harris each drove in a pair of runs to carry Midwestern State to a 4-2 series-opening win over Cameron Friday afternoon at McMahon Field.
Bermudes recorded the first hit for Midwestern State (26-23, 11-14 LSC) with a single to second in the top of the second inning before Harris lifted a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to give the Mustangs the lead at 2-1.
Left fielder Breezy McComas drove in both of Cameron's (29-17, 14-11 LSC) runs on the afternoon with solo shots in the first and seventh innings to left field. McComas finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Aggies on the day.
Cameron threatened in the third inning, loading the bases with a pair of singles and a walk before a fielder's choice to Harris ended the frame to keep the Mustangs in front.
A single and an error in the MSU infield put two runners on with no outs in the sixth for the Aggies before a sac bunt for catcher Chelsea DeLong advanced the runners into scoring position. A fielder's choice loaded the bases for the Aggies but a liner to senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson resulted in a double play to end the inning.
Midwestern added a pair of runs in the seventh to stretch its lead to 4-1. Junior first baseman
Erin Knox led off the inning with a walk while a single for junior designated hitter
Baylee Voigt put two runners on for the Mustangs with no outs. Sophomore catcher
Amanda Thomas laid down a sac bunt to move the runners into scoring position before Bermudes drove a pitch into right field to plate Knox and Voigt.
Bermudes and Thomas led the Mustangs with two hits apiece while Harris and Voigt each added one in the victory.
Helton finished one shy of matching her career high of 11 strikeouts, set last weekend against Texas A&M-Commerce, while giving up six hits and two walks on the day.
