Mustangs conclude Colorado road trip this weekend

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 20 Midwestern State women's tennis team wraps up a five-match Colorado road trip Friday and Saturday as the Mustangs take on Colorado State-Pueblo and NCAA Division I Air Force.
 
Midwestern State faces CSU-Pueblo in a 12:30 p.m. (CT) matchup Friday at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Complex before facing Air Force at the Air Force Tennis Courts in Colorado Springs Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT).
 
LAST TIME OUT
– Midwestern State went 1-2 earlier this week with a win over Metro State (Colo.) and losses to No. 3 Saint Leo (Fla.) and No. 9 Hawaii Pacific at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver
– After a pair of 7-2 losses to the top-10 teams, the Mustangs snapped their two-match skid with an 8-1 win over the Roadrunners
 
MUSTANGS JUMP TO NO. 20 IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
– Midwestern State climbed two spots to No. 20 in the Oracle/ITA Women's Division II national rankings released Mar. 23 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
– The Mustangs also stayed at No. 3 in the latest South Central Region rankings released on Mar. 16, coming in behind No. 12 St. Mary's and No. 17 Cameron
– MSU appeared in front of three nationally-ranked programs in the regional poll in No. 41 St. Edward's (Texas), No. 43 Newman (Kan.) and No. 47 Dallas Baptist (Texas)
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
– Midwestern State comes into the weekend at 8-3 on the season
– Senior Maddie Schorlemmer climbed to No. 27 in the national singles rankings this week, currently sporting a 6-4 dual play record with a 5-3 mark at No. 1 this season
– The duo of senior Lindsay Nochowicz and freshman Eirini Kontaki also appeared in the national rankings, moving in at No. 23 in doubles with a 6-3 record on the year
– Senior Lauren Pineda leads the Mustangs with an 8-2 record in singles while teaming up with sophomore Amy Clifton for a 10-1 mark as the No. 2 doubles team
– Freshman Greta Lazzarotto is 7-4 on the season in singles, primarily spending her time at the No. 2 position
– Schorlemmer and Lazzarotto round out the doubles lineup for the Mustangs, carrying a 9-2 record mostly at the No. 3 position
– Kontaki and Pineda are both 4-2 at courts three and four, respectively, to comprise the middle of the MSU lineup
– Junior Abby White is 4-0 on the season at No. 5 while Nochowicz has suffered just one loss in singles play at 6-1 appearing at Nos. 4 and 5
– Sophomore Alexis Arrieta is 3-1 at No. 6 singles on the season
 
SCOUTING THE THUNDERWOLVES
– Colorado State-Pueblo comes in on a nine-match losing streak for a 2-12 record, picking up its two wins during the fall
– Senior Mariana Hosomi is the top singles player for the ThunderWolves while teaming up in doubles with senior Teresa Haro, who leads CSU-Pueblo with five singles wins in dual play
– The pair also lead the ThunderWolves with four wins in doubles, spending time on courts one and two this season
– Head coach Mark Schleif is in his second season with the CSU-Pueblo women's tennis program after guiding the ThunderWolves to a 7-11 mark last season
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State is 4-1 against Colorado State-Pueblo in the all-time series dating back to 1997, winning the last three meetings
– The two teams will meet for the first time since 2009 when the Mustangs earned a 9-0 sweep over the ThunderWolves in Glendale, Ariz.
– Friday's matchup will be the first in Pueblo since 2004 when MSU recorded an 8-1 victory
 
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
– Air Force is 8-7 on the season and 3-0 at home, collecting wins in five of the last eight matches
– Senior Mary Meyers has spent the entire season playing at the top of the singles lineup as well as doubles with junior Lily Forlini and freshman Elizabeth Barnickel
– Kim Gidley is in her 18th season leading the Falcons tennis program with a 238-231 career record

– Saturday's matchup will be the first between Midwestern State and Air Force
 
PINEDA CAPTURES 100TH CAREER WIN
Lauren Pineda became the seventh Mustang in program history to earn career win No. 100 after her pair of victories over Colorado Mesa on Mar. 13
– Pineda is currently 105-40 for her career to rank sixth on the all-time wins list with a 42-16 singles record and 63-24 doubles mark
– Pineda comes in behind Lacey Wuthrich (138), Emilee Black (135), Brooke Gray (131), Sara Butler (129) and Marsha Meyer (111) on the MSU all-time wins list while moving in front of former teammate Taylor Coffman (100) following two victories over Southwest Baptist on Mar. 16
 
LINN EARNS WIN NO. 400
– Head coach Scott Linn received a memorable win No. 400 last May when the MSU women's tennis team upset No. 12 California (Pa.) in the NCAA Sweet 16
– Linn enters his sixth season leading the MSU men's and women's tennis programs, guiding the Mustangs to a combined seven postseason appearances since taking over the programs in 2010-11
– Linn has posted an 85-40 record (.680) with the men's team while recording an 91-43 mark (.679) with the women for a combined 176-83 (.680)
– Since 1997-98, Linn has compiled a 415-262 (.613) career record in 15 seasons as a men's head coach (227-150, .602) and 12 seasons as a women's coach (188-112, .627), averaging close to 15 wins a season
– Prior to MSU, Linn served head coaching stints at Science & Arts. (Okla.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and Florida Southern while serving as a men's assistant coach at his alma mater, East Central (Okla.), and Indiana
 
LOOKING AHEAD
– Midwestern State returns home next Thursday when the Mustangs host Texas Wesleyan at the MSU Tennis Center at 3:30 p.m.
