DENTON, Texas – Midwestern State softball split a doubleheader Sunday with Texas Woman's at Pioneer Field, dropping a 6-4 contest in the series opener before rallying for a 7-6 win to cap off the night.
With the split, Midwestern State moved to 16-14 overall and 4-6 in the Lone Star Conference while Texas Woman's moved to 15-9 on the season and 4-2 in the LSC.
In game one, Texas Woman's took a 3-0 lead through four innings before the Mustangs cracked the scoreboard with a four-run fifth inning. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for MSU with one out before a fielder's choice for designated hitter
Baylee Voigt drove in the first run for the Mustangs. Pitcher
Erin Knox followed with a three-run home run in the next at bat to give MSU a 4-3 lead.
The Pioneers knotted the game in the bottom half of the inning before adding a pair of runs off a double from left fielder Laura Mabary in the sixth to earn the 6-4 win.
Tayler Jerrick was saddled with the loss, throwing 2.0 innings in relief of Knox, allowing three hits and two earned runs.
Makenzi Harris threw a complete game while recording her second career homer with a two-run shot to left field to spark a four-run fifth inning for the Mustangs in game two of the doubleheader.
A four-run third extended the TWU lead to 5-1 before the Mustangs tied the game up in the fifth.
Following Harris' bomb, Midwestern put two more on base with no outs after a double from right fielder
Taylor Mordecai and a TWU fielding error. With two outs, left fielder
Taylor Bermudes delivered a two-RBI double to left field for a 5-5 ballgame.
The Pioneers went back in front in the bottom of the inning following an RBI single from designated hitter Sydney Hester for a 6-5 lead.
The Mustangs rallied in their final at bat with a pair of RBI singles from Bermudes and Voigt to center field to give the edge to the visitors. Catcher
Amanda Thomas began the inning for the Maroon and Gold with a single through the right side before second baseman
Misty Muniz reached base with a walk for two on with no outs. Bermudes came through once again for the Mustangs with a one-out RBI single before Voigt drove in Muniz for the 7-6 advantage.
Bermudes paced the Mustangs with two hits while adding three RBI.
Harris helped the Mustangs even the series by not allowing a hit in the seventh to come away with the 7-6 victory.
Midwestern State looks to take the series tomorrow against the Pioneers with a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
