DENTON, Texas – Texas Woman's earned a doubleheader sweep Monday over Midwestern State with a 14-8 win and 11-9 victory to take the four-game series following Sunday's split at Pioneer Field.
With the Monday sweep, Texas Woman's improved to 17-9 on the season and 6-2 in the Lone Star Conference while Midwestern State dropped to 16-16 overall and 4-8 in the LSC.
In game one, the Pioneers set the stage early with a 4-1 lead after the first inning with a walk and three singles leading off the frame for TWU to move in front 2-1. Third baseman Lindy Kennedy capped off the inning with a two-RBI double to left center for the 4-1 advantage.
Midwestern State pulled within a run in the second inning with a bases loaded walk for senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson and a sacrifice fly to right for junior pitcher
Erin Knox to make it 4-3.
With Texas Woman's holding a 9-3 lead, Vinson and Knox pulled the Mustangs closer once again in the fourth inning as Vinson ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line before Knox blasted her fifth home run of the season for a 9-7 ballgame.
However, the Pioneers would answer MSU's four runs with four of their own in the bottom half of the fourth to pull away for good and record the 14-8 victory in game one. The Mustangs stranded 10 in the loss while allowing five unearned runs behind four defensive errors.
Sophomore catcher
Amanda Thomas led MSU with three hits for the game while Vinson recorded a team-high four RBI.
Both teams were neck-and-neck in game two before the Pioneers combined for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take an 11-4 lead.
TWU struck for three runs in the fifth with a MSU fielding error scoring two and a single for center fielder Tealey Farquhar adding another run for a 7-3 advantage.
After second baseman
Misty Muniz trimmed the TWU lead to 7-4 following an RBI single to right, the Pioneers posted five hits in the bottom half of the sixth to carry them to an 11-4 advantage.
An MSU rally in the seventh would fall short, scoring five runs for a final 11-9. A Vinson single led off the frame for the Mustangs before a Knox double put two in scoring position with no outs. A wild pitch and single for junior designated hitter
Baylee Voigt plated Knox for an 11-6 score with no outs.
The Mustangs added three more runs on a pair of errors with the bases loaded to come within two before a groundout double play ended the threat.
Senior center fielder
Haley Howerton led the Mustangs at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing. Errors doomed the Mustangs once again, committing four miscues for the fourth-straight game for five unearned TWU runs. Freshman
Makenzi Harris took the loss for MSU in the circle, allowing 12 hits, six earned runs and four walks while fanning two batters.
Midwestern State takes a break from LSC play Wednesday with a doubleheader against Oklahoma Baptist at Lady Bison Park in Shawnee beginning at 5 p.m.
