Mustangs win streak reaches six in 14-2 rout of Lindenwood

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Midwestern State softball belted out 15 hits and posted an eight-run seventh to record a day one sweep at the NSU Softball Festival with a 14-2 win over Lindenwood (Mo.) Saturday evening at the Tahlequah High School Softball Field.

Junior designated hitter Baylee Voigt went 4-for-4 on the night to lead Midwestern State (11-7) to its sixth-straight victory. Senior center fielder Haley Howerton pushed her hitting streak to 10 games with a 3-for-3 outing and a pair of walks while posting a team-high three runs scored. Senior third baseman Katelyn Vinson also recorded a three-hit showing in five appearances at the plate.

In the circle, freshman Makenzi Harris threw a complete game with seven strikeouts, an individual single-game high for the Mustangs this season, while giving up five hits, six walks and an earned run to move to 3-1 on the season.

The Mustangs went in front 2-0 following the first inning as Voigt drove in a pair of runs with a double to right center after Howerton led off the frame with a walk and Vinson singled through the left side.

Midwestern stretched its lead to 4-0 in the third as back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out for the Mustangs. Freshman right fielder Taylor Mordecai followed with two of her team-high five RBI with a single before Lindenwood (2-5) struck for its first run in the bottom of the inning after an MSU error in the infield.

A run in the fourth and sixth innings extended the MSU advantage to 6-2 as Howerton came home on a passed ball in the fourth while a Mordecai single to center field plated the sixth run for the Mustangs.

Midwestern capped off the night with an eight-run seventh inning, its fourth inning of at least seven runs in the last four games.

A fielder's choice for junior left fielder Taylor Bermudes plated freshman second baseman Misty Muniz to begin the scoring rampage for the Mustangs in the seventh. A single to left by senior first baseman Chelsey Wall increased the MSU lead to 9-2 before an error by the Lindenwood shortstop drove in two more runs for the Maroon and Gold.

After batting through the lineup, Muniz returned to the plate and reached base for the second time in the inning with a single to right center to bring in Mordecai for a 12-2 contest. A passed ball and Howerton double completed the inning for the Mustangs to record their third 10-plus margin victory in the last four games.

Midwestern State wraps up the NSU Softball Festival tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. as the Mustangs take on Wisconsin-Parkside before facing off against William Jewell (Mo.) at 2 p.m.
