TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Junior left fielder
Taylor Bermudes went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a double while Midwestern State mounted a six-run sixth inning to record an 8-2 win over Wisconsin-Parkside in the NSU Softball Festival Sunday morning at RiverHawks Park.
Bermudes tallied the first multiple home run game of her career, becoming the 14th Mustang in program history to accomplish the feat and the second this season after senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson totaled two homers in a win over Colorado State-Pueblo last weekend at the WT Invitational.
Bermudes also scored a career-high three runs while matching a season-best four RBI to carry Midwestern State (12-7) to its seventh-straight victory.
Junior hurler
Erin Knox moved to 4-0 on the season, tying a season-high five strikeouts in her third-straight complete game effort. Knox faced the minimum in four innings, allowing five hits and one walk on the day.
After leaving runners stranded in scoring position in the top of the first, the Mustangs went ahead in the third with Bermudes blasting her second home run of the season down the left field line for a 1-0 contest.
Wisconsin-Parkside (1-6) struck in the bottom half of the frame, putting runners in scoring position after a pair of one-out singles and a wild pitch. A single to center by starting pitcher Carly Dundee drove in the lone runs for the Rangers on the day before Dundee was thrown out at second to end the inning.
The Mustangs evened the game in the fifth as a Bermudes solo shot to left center made it a 2-2 contest.
Midwestern's offense came alive in the sixth with a six-run frame with five hits and two errors by the UW-P defense. The Mustangs threatened right away as back-to-back throwing errors by the third baseman put freshman right fielder
Taylor Mordecai and sophomore third baseman
Amanda Thomas on base with no outs.
An RBI single up the middle for sophomore catcher
Kara Tilton drove in the eventual game-winning run on the ensuing at bat for a 3-2 MSU advantage. Doubles for senior center fielder
Haley Howerton and Bermudes plated three more runs for the Mustangs before a two-out double from Knox and a single for senior first baseman
Chelsey Wall capped off the inning to push the lead to 8-2.
The Rangers were limited to just one hit and a walk in the final two innings of play.
Knox and junior designated hitter
Baylee Voigt also recorded strong performances at the plate for the Mustangs, each finishing 2-for-4.
Midwestern State concludes the NSU Softball Festival with a 2 p.m. matchup against William Jewell (Mo.) at the Tahlequah High School Softball Field.
