PREVIEW: Mustangs visit Texas Woman's for Sunday contest

Midwestern State travels to Denton for a rare Sunday night contest against Texas Woman's for the duo's second Lone Star Conference meeting. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Texas Woman's enters the game at 6-8 overall and 2-3 in Lone Star Conference action after defeating Cameron 66-53 in Lawton, Okla., on Thursday.  Coach Beth Jillson's Pioneers have won two of their last three games and are led by senior guard Rebekah Cluley of Wichita Falls, Texas/High, the former MSU Mustang who is the Pioneers only double-digit scorer with 10.6 points (13th in the LSC), to go with 4.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists (ninth in the LSC) and 1.3 steals a game. Senior forward Ria Pateraki of Athens, Greece adds 9.6 points (20th in the LSC) and 4.7 rebounds, while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor (54-of-118, 10th in the LSC).  True freshman guard Kenesha Saygo of Killeen, Texas/Ellison adds 9.5 points (21st in the LSC) and 3.5 boards, as junior forward Toree Mason of Shreveport, La./Byrd is averaging 7.3 points and a team-leading 4.9 rebounds (19th in the LSC). TWU is averaging 63.4 points a contest, while allowing opponents 67.9 points a game.

ABOUT THE SERIES
This is the 53rd meeting between Midwestern State and Texas Woman's with MSU holding a 33-19 series lead. MSU sports a 15-8 advantage in the series at Ligon Coliseum, and a 15-7 advantage in Denton. MSU has a 3-4 record against TWU where the site was not recorded. MSU has won six of the last seven meetings against the Pioneers, including the first meeting this season -- a 70-59 win in Ligon Coliseum on Jan. 2, 2014.

LAST TIME OUT VS. TWU
The Mustangs erased a six-point first half deficit with a 24-11 run in the last 11:24 of the first half to take a nine-point lead into intermission, then extended the lead in the second half to open the new year with a 70-59 victory.  Nicole Smallwood led the Mustangs with 13 points, nailing 3-of-6 from the 3-point arc, while Andrea Carter collected 12 points with 13 rebounds to chalk up her fifth double-double of the season.  Toree Mason led TWU with 11 points.  MSU Shot 48.0 percent from the floor (24-of-50) and 5-of-14 from the 3-point arc (35.7 percent).

 
 

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State is at 10-6 on the season, 2-3 in Lone Star Conference action. Coach Noel Johnson's Mustangs started the season at number 10, but early season troubles scuttled the ranking. The Mustangs are led by junior All-America forward Andrea Carter who is averaging 14.2 points and 8.7 rebounds to rank fourth in the LSC in scoring and third in rebounding, with 1.9 steals (fourth in the LSC) and 0.5 blocks per game (sixth in the LSC). Senior guard Kirsti Degelia adds 10.9 points (12th in the LSC) with 1.3 three-pointers a game, to go with 3.1 assists (sixth in the LSC) and 1.4 steals. Junior guard Dianna Jones adds 10.2 points a game (15th in the LSC) to go with her 4.6 assists (second in the LSC), 1.7 steals (sixth in the LSC) and 1.77 assist-turnover ratio (third in the LSC). Junior guard Shatoia Gober chalks up 7.8 points a contest, as she pulls down 5.1 rebounds with 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals. MSU averages 69.9 points a contest, while allowing 65.8.

LAST TIME OUT
The Mustangs held a 13-point first half lead, but the 14th ranked Tarleton State TexAnns outscored MSU 33-20 in the second half to take down MSU 57-51 at Ligon Coliseum.  The Mustangs held a 49-48 lead with 4:38 to play only to see the TexAnns close the contest on a 9-2 run for the win. Kirsti Degelia was the only double-digit scorer for MSU with 12 points, while Shatoia Gober added nine points with five rebounds.  Lisa Hampton added eight points, while Taylor Dowd chipped in six points with six rebounds and three blocks.  The Mustangs shot only 32.9 percent from the floor (19-of-59), including 4-of-16 from the arc (25.0 percent) and were even on the boards with the TexAnns 38-38.

MSU UNDER NOEL JOHNSON
Noel Johnson is 82-71 in her sixth year as the head coach of the Mustangs. She was the Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year in 2012 after turning the program around with a 19-8 season, then earned the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Small College Coach of the Year award for leading MSU to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 with a 26-6 record and the Lone Star Conference Championship.

MSU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Midwestern State started the season at number 10 in the WBCA's USA Today Sports Division II Top 25, but early losses dropped them to the first team receiving votes for the next three weeks. The Mustangs are currently not receiving votes in the poll.

THREE...DOT...THOUGHTS...
The Mustangs dropped their third game in four outings with the 57-51 loss to Tarleton State at Ligon Coliseum ... the loss snapped a four-game winning streak over the TexAnns ... Still the Mustangs held an opponent to under 60 points for the sixth time this season and the ninth time under 70 points ... It was MSU's first loss of the season when holding an opponent under 60 ... The TSU game was the third one this season that the Mustangs had faced an opponent ranked in the Top 15 of the WBCA's USA Today Sports Division II Coaches Poll.  MSU is now 0-3 in those contests ... By grabbing 38 rebounds in the game, MSU matched Tarleton on the boards and equaled an opponent in board work for the third time this season.  It also matched the previous game's 38-38 board mark against Eastern New Mexico ... MSU led Tarleton by 13 in the first half before dropping the game.  It was the first time since West Texas A&M beat MSU 71-69 on Feb. 22, 2012 in Canyon that the Mustangs lost a game after being up by double-digits ... Senior Kirsti Degelia of Denton, Texas/Krum became Midwestern State's 10th woman to score 1,200 career points.  Degelia currently has 1,241 points and needs eight points to pass Shannon Boase (1995-98) with 1,248 in ninth all-time at MSU.  She needs 18 points to leap into seventh all-time, passing Dee Wood (1987-91) with 1,255 and Annette George (1981-85) with 1,258 points … Degelia also ranks eighth at MSU win 291 career assists … Junior forward Andrea Carter of Angleton, Texas is fourth in scoring and third rebounding in the Lone Star Conference, averaging 14.2 points and 8.7 rebounds a game, while ranking fourth in the LSC in steals (1.9), sixth in field goal percentage (53.4 percent), sixth in blocked shots (0.5) and eighth in free throw percentage (73.8 percent) … Carter became MSU's 10th woman to grab 600 career rebounds and moved into eighth at MSU all-time equaling Emily Dill (1990-94) with 629.  Seventh on the list is Rulinda Vogtsberger (1978-81) with 666 …Junior guard Lisa Hampton of Kennedale, Texas/Nolan Catholic has connected on 6-of-13 3-point field goals in the last two games, a 46.2 percent clip …
