MSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAMEDAY: Top seeded Mustangs out for title against WT

The top-seeded Mustangs play for the championship of the Lone Star Conference Tournament against third seed West Texas A&M on Saturday. 
 
Midwestern State (23-5, 16-4), the LSC champions, are coming off a 100-83 win over Tarleton State in the semifinals on Friday.  West Texas A&M (20-11, 14-6) is the third seed who defeated Texas A&M-Commerce 87-76 in semifinal action on Friday.
 
Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

The No. 1 seed Mustangs advance to the LSC Tournament championship game the third time in program history when they meet West Texas A&M.

MSU, champion of the Lone Star Conference with a 23-5 mark, 16-4 in league action have won five straight after downing Tarleton State on Friday.

The Mustangs are paced by the powerful duo of junior Kirsti Degelia and sophomore Andrea Carter.

Degelia, a second-team All-Lone Star Conference performer in 2012-13, who leads the team and is third in the Lone Star Conference with 16.2 points a game (80th in Division II) to go with 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists (fourth in the LSC).  She has 993 career points and needs just seven more to reach the 1,000 point club.  The junior from Denton, Texas/Krum was the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 14 after chalking up a career-high 27 points against Tarleton State.

Carter is a first-team All-LSC selection and LSC tri-Defensive Player of the Year.  She picked up the LSC Defensive Player of the Week award five times this season to go with the LSC Offensive Player of the Week award she collected earlier in the year.  She has posted 15 double-doubles in 28 games this season (ninth in Division II).  The sophomore from Angleton is second on the team and eighth in the LSC with a 13.2 scoring average, while standing fifth in the LSC with a 49.1 field goal percentage (133-of-271).  She leads the squad, is third in the LSC and is 19th nationally with 10.3 rebounds and is second in the conference with 2.6 steals a contest (54th in Division II).

Sophomore Shatoia Gober of Waco, Texas/Midway contributes 9.1 points a contest to go with her 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals an outing.  She is also shooting 47.3 percent from the floor (104-of-220).

MSU is averaging 70.2 points with 39.7 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 60.9 points a contest.

ABOUT THE LADY BUFFS


West Texas A&M makes its LSC best 17th appearance in the Lone Star Conference Tournament championship game.

The Lady Buffs of coach Krista Gerlich are 20-11 overall, 14-6 in the LSC, and have won eight straight heading into the title game.

Junior forward Devin Griffin of Lubbock, Texas/Coronado is second the Lone Star Conference with 17.3 points (50th D II) to go with her 7.4 rebounds (sixth in the LSC).
 
Sophomore forward Chontiquah White of Dallas, Texas/Oak Cliff Life School is second on the team with 14.7 points a contest (sixth in the LSC) to go with her team leading 8.5 rebounds (fourth in the LSC) and her second in the LSC 57.0 field goal percentage.
 
Junior guard Casey Land of Canyon, Texas adds 9.7 points a game, hitting 34.1 on 3's on 1.5 treys a game (both sixth in the LSC.

The Lady Buffs average 65.5 points a game (fourth in the LSC), while allowing 58.6 ppg (second in the LSC).

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State faces West Texas A&M for the 56th time, the third time this season and the first time in LSC Tournament play when they meet on Saturday evening in the Lone Star Conference Tournament championship game in Allen.
 
Midwestern State trails in the series 15-40 that dates back to the 1976-77 season.
 
It's the first known neutral site game between the school, however there are three games that the location is unclear.  MSU trails the series 9-17 at Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, and WT has a commanding 22-4 record in Canyon.
 
This is the third meeting of the season for MSU and WT with the Mustangs winning both meetings, 74-55 in Wichita Falls on Dec. 5 and 58-55 in Canyon on Feb. 6.
 
Those wins are the first consecutive victories over WT since winning four straight from 2001-2004.  MSU has claimed four of the last six meetings after suffering a 13-game losing streak to WT from 2004 to 2010.


ABOUT THE LSC TOURNAMENT

The Lone Star Conference Tournament features the top eight of the 11 teams in the league.  The winner is the tournament champion and receives the LSC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Championships.
 
The top-seeded Mustangs beat #8 seed Eastern New Mexico 85-70 in the quarterfinals while #4 Tarleton State beat #5 Incarnate Word 74-56.  The other side of the bracket had #3 West Texas A&M beating #6 Angelo State 61-36 and #7 Texas A&M-Commerce upsetting #2 Abilene Christian 80-79.
 
MSU ripped Tarleton 100-83 in the semifinals, while WT downed A&M-Commerce 87-76.
 
That sets up tonight's tournament championship game at 6 p.m. between MSU and WT.
