MSU WOMEN'S GAMEDAY: Mustangs face TexAnns in LSC Semifinal

The Mustangs continue postseason play as the top seed in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament against Tarleton State on Friday. 
 
Midwestern State (22-5, 16-4), the LSC co-champions, are coming off an 85-70 win over Eastern New Mexico in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.  Tarleton State (19-8, 14-6) is the fourth seed who defeated Incarnate Word 74-56 in quarterfinal action on Thursday.
 
Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. Friday at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

The Mustangs advanced to the LSC Tournament semifinals the third time in program history when they meet Tarleton State in Allen.

MSU, champion of the Lone Star Conference with a 22-5 mark, 16-4 in league action. The Mustangs earned the top seed by sweeping Tarleton State.

The Mustangs are paced by the powerful duo of junior Kirsti Degelia and sophomore Andrea Carter.

Degelia, a second-team All-Lone Star Conference performer in 2012-13, leads the team and is third in the Lone Star Conference with 16.0 points a game (89th in Division II) to go with 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists (fourth in the LSC).  The junior from Denton, Texas/Krum was the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 14 after chalking up a career-high 27 points against Tarleton State.

Carter is a first-team All-LSC selection and LSC tri-Defensive Player of the Year.  She picked up the LSC Defensive Player of the Week award five times this season to go with the LSC Offensive Player of the Week award she collected earlier in the year.  She has posted 15 double-doubles in 27 games this season (ninth in Division II).  The sophomore from Angleton is second on the team and ninth in the LSC with a 13.0 scoring average, while standing fifth in the LSC with a 49.0 field goal percentage (127-of-259).  She leads the squad, is second in the LSC and is 14th nationally with 10.4 rebounds and is second in the conference with 2.6 steals a contest (54th in Division II).

Sophomore Shatoia Gober of Waco, Texas/Midway contributes 9.2 points a contest to go with her 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals an outing.  She is also shooting 46.7 percent from the floor (100-of-214).

MSU is averaging 69.1 points with 39.6 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 60.0 points a contest.

ABOUT THE TEXANNS


Tarleton State is the defending Lone Star Conference Tournament champion.

The TexAnns of coach Ronnie Hearne are 19-8 overall, 14-6 in the LSC, but have lost two of their last four games.

Kiara Wright of Pittsburg, Texas leads the Lone Star Conference with 17.7 points (50th D II) to go with her NCAA II leading 14.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game (third in LSC).
 
Senior guard Peyton Adamson of Rockwall, Texas is second on the team with 15.5 points a contest (fourth in LSC, 90th DII) to go with her LSC leading .447 3-point percentage (third in D II) and 2.5 3-pointers per game (24th DII), and 1.8 rebounds.
 
Junior guard Brianna Bledsoe of Stephenville, Texas adds 9.1 points a game.  The TexAnns average 73.1 points a game (second in the LSC), while allowing 64.1 ppg (sixth in the LSC.

The Zias average 54.7 points a game (10th in the LSC), while allowing 65.8 ppg (ninth in the LSC).

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State faces Tarleton State for the 59th time, the third time this season and the second time in postseason play when they meet on Friday evening in the Lone Star Conference Tournament semifinals in Allen.
 
Midwestern State holds a 31-27 lead in the series that dates back to the 1975-76 season.
 
MSU has a 1-0 series lead in the Lone Star Conference Tournament after beating the TexAnns 67-56 on Feb. 26, 2002.  MSU leads the series 17-10 at Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, while Tarleton holds a 14-13 advantage in Stephenville.
 
This is the third meeting of the season for MSU and Tarleton with the Mustangs winning both meetings, 78-71 in overtime in Wichita Falls on Jan. 12 and 71-63 in Stephenville on Feb. 23.
 
The wins snapped a 14-game losing streak to the TexAnns.


ABOUT THE LSC TOURNAMENT

The Lone Star Conference Tournament features the top eight of the 11 teams in the league.  The winner is the tournament champion and receives the LSC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Championships.
 
The top-seeded Mustangs beat #8 seed Eastern New Mexico 85-70 in the quarterfinals while #4 Tarleton State beat #5 Incarnate Word 74-56.  The other side of the bracket had #3 West Texas A&M beating #6 Angelo State 61-36 and #7 Texas A&M-Commerce upsetting #2 Abilene Christian 80-79.
 
The semifinals have West Texas A&M against Texas A&M-Commerce at noon, while MSU faces Tarleton at 6 p.m. prior to the MSU men's semifinal game at 8:30.
 
The tournament championship game is Saturday at 6 p.m. featuring the semifinal winners.
