ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

The Mustangs open play in the LSC Tournament as the No. 1 seed for just the second time in program history when they meet Eastern New Mexico in Allen.

MSU, co-champion of the league with Abilene Christian with identical 21-5, 16-4 records.  Since the teams split the games between them, the Mustangs earned the top seed by sweeping Tarleton State, while ACU split with the TexAnns.

The Mustangs are paced by the powerful duo of junior Kirsti Degelia and sophomore Andrea Carter.

Degelia, who was the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 14 after chalking up a career-high 27 points against Tarleton State, leads the Mustangs offensively. The honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference performer a season ago is a junior from Denton, Texas/Krum who is third in the Lone Star Conference with 15.7 points a game (89th in Division II) to go with 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists (fourth in the LSC).

Carter has picked up the LSC Defensive Player of the Week award five times this season to go with the LSC Offensive Player of the Week award she collected earlier in the year.  She has posted 15 double-doubles in 26 games this season (ninth in Division II).  The sophomore from Angleton is second on the team and eighth in the LSC with a 12.9 scoring average, while standing seventh in the LSC with a 48.4 field goal percentage (120-of-248).  She leads the squad, is second in the LSC and is 14th nationally with 10.6 rebounds and is second in the conference with 2.6 steals a contest (54th in Division II).

Sophomore Shatoia Gober of Waco, Texas/Midway contributes 9.2 points a contest to go with her 5.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals an outing.  She is also shooting 47.0 percent from the floor (95-of-202).

MSU is averaging 68.5 points with 39.6 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 59.7 points a contest.

ABOUT THE ZIAS

Eastern New Mexico is making its second consecutive LSC Tournament appearance, and its first back-to-back appearance since 1999-2000.

The Zias of coach Lindsay Wilson are 7-21 overall, 6-14 in the LSC, but have lost three straight and four of their last six.  However, among their wins are LSC champs MSU and ACU, while Tarleton State and Incarnate Word escaped Portales with wins of three or less (and overtime for UIW).

Senior guard Tara Johnson of Portales, N.M., leads the squad with 7.9 points to go with 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game .

Senior guard Hannah Altheide of El Paso, Texas/Chapin, is second on the team with 7.3 points a contest to go with her 1.0 3-pointers per game, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals (15th in the LSC).

Sophomore guard Ashlee Pierson of Clovis, N.M., adds 7.2 points, while freshman forward Nelsha Peterson adds 7.0 points with 3.9 boards, while sophomore center Jasmine Johnson of DeSoto, Texas, leads ENMU with 4.8 rebounds a game.
