MSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAMEDAY: No. 25 Mustangs face Metro State in Regional Semifinals

The Mustangs advance to the South Central Region semifinals in the NCAA Division II Tournament as the No. 2 seed meets No. 6 seed Metro State (Colo.) on Saturday. 
 
Midwestern State (25-5, 16-4), the LSC champions, are coming off a 91-78 win over seventh seed Tarleton State in the regional quarterfinals on Friday.  Metro State (21-9, 17-5) upset No. 3 seed St. Mary's 58-55 in quarterfinal action on Saturday.
 
Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. (CDT) Saturday at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colo.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

The Mustangs advances for the first time ever in the NCAA Division II Tournament to reach the regional semifinals to face Metro State.

MSU, champion of the Lone Star Conference with a 25-5 mark, 16-4 in league action have won seven straight after beating Tarleton State on Friday in the regional quarterfinals.

The Mustangs are paced by the powerful all-region duo of junior Kirsti Degelia and sophomore Andrea Carter.

Degelia, a second-team All-Lone Star Conference and second-team Daktronics All-South Central Region performer in 2012-13, leads the team and is third in the Lone Star Conference with 16.2 points a game (77th in Division II) to go with 3.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists (fourth in the LSC).  She is 17th on the career scoring list with 1024 career points.  The junior from Denton, Texas/Krum was named to the All-Lone Star Conference Tournament team and was the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 14 after chalking up a career-high 27 points against Tarleton State.

Carter is a first-team All-LSC selection, LSC tri-Defensive Player of the Year and first-team Daktronics All-South Central Region choice.  She picked up the LSC Defensive Player of the Week award five times this season to go with the LSC Offensive Player of the Week award she collected earlier in the year.  She has posted 16 double-doubles in 30 games this season (12th in Division II).  The sophomore from Angleton is second on the team and ninth in the LSC with a 13.3 scoring average, while standing fifth in the LSC with a 49.0 field goal percentage (142-of-290).  She leads the squad, is third in the LSC and is 26th nationally with 10.4 rebounds and is second in the conference with 2.5 steals a contest (54th in Division II).

Sophomore Dianna Jones of Hewitt, Texas/Midway was the Lone Star Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring 23 points in the championship game, including nine of MSU's 11 points in the last two minutes of regulation and overtime.  Her runner in the lane that went through the cords as the clock expired was the game winner for MSU.  She is averaging 9.7 points a game and is third in the LSC hitting 37.5 percent from 3-point range (27-of-72).  She is second in the LSC and 41st nationally with her 85.4 percent shooting from the free throw line (76-of-89).

Sophomore Shatoia Gober of Waco, Texas/Midway contributes 9.3 points a contest to go with her 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals an outing.  She is also shooting 47.7 percent from the floor (114-of-239).

MSU is averaging 71.4 points with 39.2 rebounds a game.  The Mustangs allow opponents 62.2 points a contest.

ABOUT THE ROADRUNNERS


Metro State is the sixth seed and returned to the tournament after reaching the Sweet 16 last season, advancing with at win over No. 3 St. Mary's.

The Roadrunners of coach Tanya Haave are 21-9 overall, 17-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Junior center Amy Nelson of Richmond, Utah/Sky View leads the Runners with 11.2 points to go with her 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
 
Senior guard Emily Wood of Louisville, Colo./Monarch is second on the team with 10.9 points a contest to go with her .352 3-point percentage and 1.4 3-pointers per game, and 3.2 rebounds.
 
Senior guard Kristin Valencia of Moriarty, N.M. adds 9.6 points a game with a team leading 8.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists a contest.

The Roadrunners average 63.1 points a game, while allowing 54.0 ppg.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State faces Metro State for the third time they meet on Saturday evening in the semifinals of the South Central Regional in Grand Junction.
 
Midwestern State has not beaten Metro State in the two previous meetings between the schools.
 
Metro State downed Midwestern 62-53 in a classic at Canyon, Texas on Nov. 14, 1997, then fell 74-41 at the Auraria Event Center in Denver in Nov. 25, 2006.


ABOUT THE NCAA II TOURNAMENT AND SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL

The NCAA Division II Tournament boasts 64 of the top Division II teams in the country split into eight geographic regions for regional play.
 
The Mustangs are the No. 2 seed of the South Central Regional, hosted by No. 1 seed Colorado Mesa at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colo.
 
In the regional quarterfinals Friday No. 6 Metro State beat No. 3 St. Mary's 58-55, No. 2 MSU ripped No. 7 Tarleton 91-78, No. 1 Colorado Mesa crushed No. 8 Fort Lewis (Colo.) 74-48, and No. 4 Texas-Permian Basin beat No. 5 Abilene Christian 70-68.
 
Regional semifinal play is Saturday, with the Metro State taking on MSU at 6 p.m. CDT, with the CMU advancing against UTPB.
 
The Regional Championship Game is Monday at 8 p.m. CDT.
