The Jets (0-2) opened the season with a pair of one-goal defeats to Eastern New Mexico (2-1) and Rockhurst (Ill.) (1-0) on their home pitch last weekend. Newman is in the midst of playing six of eight games at the comfortable confines of Wilkins Field where they battled to a 4-5-1 mark in 2011. Senior midfielder
Nathan Modesto accounted for the Jets’ lone tally of the season on a penalty kick against Eastern New Mexico. Midwestern battled to a 1-0 result over Newman last season in Wichita Falls.
All-Time Series: Midwestern State leads the series, 4-0.
Coach Doug Elder on the Jets: “They lost to Rockhurst – a Top 20 team – on a PK. They are good defensively, physical, very aggressive. They play very hard. They press all over the field and they have pretty good size. It’s hard place to play especially on a Friday night.”

The Thunderwolves (1-1) split a pair of matches at last weekend’s Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix falling 2-0 to host GCU on Friday before rolling to an improved 3-0 result Sunday against St. Martin’s (Wash.). CSU-Pueblo’s goal production was spread amongst three players with a goal each including junior forward
Dustin Giest, junior midfielder
Denim Douglas and sophomore midfielder
Rene Chacon. Senior goalkeeper
Patrick Markis has made 13 saves while allowing a pair of goals through 135 minutes between the posts this season.
All-Time Series: Midwestern State leads the series, 10-2-1.
Coach Doug Elder on the Thunderwolves: “I don’t know much about Pueblo. We’re just focusing on (Friday’s) game and we’ll come back on Saturday and get a good scouting report together on Pueblo in getting ready for that game. We don’t want to look too far ahead.”
A LOOK BACK... Junior forward
VcMor Eligwe scored on a through ball from freshman
Idi Camara in the 61
st minutes then assisted on
Len Smith’s goal 10 minutes later to lift Midwestern State to a season opening 2-0 result over Texas A&M International at the MSU Soccer Field. The Mustangs advanced their home field unbeaten streak to 44 matches dating back to the 2007 season while moving the regular season unbeaten string to eight games.
Coach Doug Elder said: “It was a good start for a lot of our younger players and I think we learned if you stay organized and play hard defensively you have a chance to win the game at all times because you can pop in a goal or maybe two and get the win. We weren’t really tested with only two shots. I’m waiting to see how our goalkeeper (junior Ray Clark) does. I think we have two good goalkeepers (Clark and sophomore Nathan Kenyon). Our defense played well but we’re headed for a good test on the road.”
