ABILENE, Texas – Midwestern State is tied for fifth after the opening round of the season at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate Monday at the Diamondback Golf Club.
 
Sophomore Derek Oland and redshirt freshman Santiago Gomez each fired 2-under-69 to come in seventh after the first round of the 36-hole tournament at the par 71, 6977 yard Diamondback course.
 
"Derek shot 2-under, but he didn't really play well," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "He's so talented he just hung in there and came in 2-under."
 
"It's Santiago's first tournament and he had a great round.  He hit nearly all of his fairways and greens and was in control of his round all day."
 
The pair were joined by junior Jeremy LeGuen with a 3-over 74, senior Raine Copeland at 5-over 76 and senior Antonio Herran at 6-over 77.
 
Freshman Ian Gallagher also shot a 77 playing as an individual.
 
The Mustangs, who were in the first pairing of the day, posted a 4-over 288 and are tied with West Texas A&M in fifth.
 
Host Abilene Christian scorched the field in the first round with a 14-under 270 as a team.  St. Mary's is second at 1-over 285, with McMurry at 2-over 286 and Queens (N.C.) fourth at 3-over 287 ahead of MSU.
 
"We had a good first round," said Ray.  "This can be a good team.  Everyone can post a quality score."
 
Individually, ACU's Alex Carpenter fired a 7-under 64 and leads by three strokes over teammate Morgan Johnson at 4-under 67.
 
The final round of the tournament is Tuesday.
