Whittley fires third consecutive 80 to finish 20th at NCAA II Super Region 4 Championships

AMARILLO, Texas - Midwestern State's Kendra Whittley showed consistency by logging her third consecutive round of 80 to finish 20th at the NCAA Division II Women's Super Region 4 Championships played at the par-72, 5,964-yard course at the Tascosa Country Club.
 
The sophomore from Wall competed in the regional for the second consecutive season improving on her 44th place showing at the 2010 NCAA II Super Region 4 Championships played at the Tascosa Country Club. Whittley played the course 16 strokes to better a 40-over par 256 total.
 
"She was really good for us last year and she had a great year this year," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "Kendra is very accurate off of the tee and she chips and putts very well. She was able to win our first tournament as an individual this year in tough conditions because of that."
 
Whittley notched the 2-year old program's best average score (76.82) and score versus par (5.14) this season and claimed the its first individual title at the Midwestern State Invitational. She also notched runner-up performances at the Audible Closed Championship at the Dallas Golf Club and the Drury Spring Shootout.
 
Whittley's individual performance capped a stellar 2010-11 campaign for the Mustangs as they finished in the top six in eight of 10 tournaments and finished second on the team leader board at the 12th Annual Northeastern State Golf Classic, Audible Closed Championship and Lone Star Conference Championships.
 
"We will have five of the six back and all have improved," Ray said. 'This was a really good region this year, so while we improved so did the rest of the team. They will work this summer to improve. We'll definitely be looking to make the regional tournament next year."
 
The Mustangs five juniors-to-be in Whittley, Lindsay Burkhart, Taylor Klutts, Megan Richardson and Lauren Romines to go along with signees Brittany Smith from Petrolia and Burkburnett's Brenna Moore. The lone loss is senior Kyla Whittley, who finished ninth individually at the LSC Championship.
 
Tarleton State claimed an NCAA Division II Super Region 4 championship logging a three-round total of 923 (+59) with round of 307, 303 and 313.
 
The TexAnns will be joined by national qualifying St. Edward's (2nd/940) and Western Washington (3rd/943) in the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship to be held May 11-14 at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.
 
Tarleton State's Carla Cooper claimed an individual Super Region 4 championship carding rounds of 73, 73 and 76 for a total of 222 (+6).
 
Sonoma State's Spencer Heller (3rd/231), Grand Canyon's Tiffany Hewetson (5th/232) and Northeastern State's Whitney McAteer (t-7th/235) also earned individual berths in the NCAA II national championships.
