About the Mustangs

Midwestern State cleared the Tarleton State hurdle and sent the Texans packing back to Stephenville with a 64-51 victory Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA II South Central Regional.

Senior guard Chris Hagan continued his hot play by notching each of his game-high 21 points in the second half as the Houston native buried consecutive 3-pointers in transition as part of a 10-0 run midway through the second half.

It was third consecutive and 19th 20-point performance of the season, but the real story was defense.

The Mustangs limited the Texans to 29.8 percent from the field and put a lid on Daktronics All-South Central Region performer Corin Henry, who managed 3-of-12 shooting to finish with 11 points. Henry had poured 29 points just a week earlier to lift TSU to an LSC semifinal win.

Junior guard Michael Loyd pitched in 10 points and five assists off of the bench, while Keonte' Logan, Kevin Loyd and Adrian Van Buren buried early 3-pointers to give the Mustangs the lead for good five minutes into the contest.

About the Lions

Missouri Southern's guard tandem of Skyler Bowlin and Jason Adams combined for 51 points as the 9th-ranked Lions survived Washburn (Kan.) 82-79 in overtime in Saturday's opening round of the NCAA II South Central Regional at Hamilton Fieldhouse.

Together, the duo hit 10-of-20 from 3-point range against the Ichabods, but has been a formidable combo all season.

Bowlin, the Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year, directs the Lions' attack from the point guard position. The 6-3 Paragould, Ark. native scores 18.6 points a game while dishing out 5.7 assists a game.

Adams, a 6-5 junior from Carthage, Mo., plays a lot like another MSU foe this season - Angelo State's Richard Thomas.

The long and lean forward garnered second-team Daktronics All-South Central Region and first-team All-MIAA honors after leading Missouri Southern to a regular season league title scoring 19.4 points and pulling down 5.9 rebounds a game.

Junior Keane Thomann, a 6-11 center from Olney, Ill., gives the Lions their top threat on the block averaging 15.6 points and 7.3 rebounds a contest.

Missouri Southern has won 11 of its last 13 contests.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Missouri Southern meet for the 10th time on the hardwood in Sunday afternoon's NCAA II South Central Region semifinal at Hamilton Fieldhouse in Edmond, Okla.

The Lions own a 6-3 edge in the series which dates back to the 1971-72 season and have won the last three and five of the last six.

The teams battled for the 2000 South Central Region title with MSSU coming away with a 92-83 victory at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center on March 11, 2000 in Joplin.

The teams played a home-and-home over the next two seasons with Missouri Southern defeating MSU 74-62 on Nov. 20, 2000 in Wichita Falls and 100-72 exactly a year later in Joplin.

Former NAIA All-American Robert Harris and teammate Tony Ammons tallied 12 points each in MSU's last victory over the Lions - a 76-54 decision on Jan. 5, 1985 in Wichita Falls.
