Game Day: Mustangs look to continue dominance over Rams under dome

Setting the Stage

The Mustangs and Rams enter the final week of the regular season as part of a four-way tie with Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M for second place in the South Division.

And only three of those teams will advance to next week's LSC Championship in Bartlesville.

Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes following the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 6.

About the Mustangs

It's certain the road to Bartlesville is still paved with wins.

Get two of them in the final week of the regular season and the Mustangs will get a chance to go for their third consecutive conference championship.

A stumble tonight could damage MSU's chances to even travel to Bartlesville.

The Mustangs will also celebrate the accomplishment of its senior class of Charlie Logan, Chris Hagan, Adrian Van Buren, David Terrell and Jon Trilli tonight as the five players will see their last action on Gerald Stockton Court.

Logan will play in his 109th game tonight against Angelo State and has been a part of two Lone Star Conference championship teams at Midwestern.

The local product set a school record with 50 dunks last season and has scored 699 points and pulled down 440 rebounds in his four seasons as a Mustang.

Hagan transferred from Blinn College two seasons ago and recently became just the eighth two-year player in storied history of the MSU men's basketball program to score 1,000 points.

With 1,016 points, the Houston product ranks fifth on MSU's all-time scoring list for two-year players behind Tony Forch (1,391), Henry Crawford (1,320), Nolan Richardson (1,103) and Chuck Hall (1,060).

Hagan set MSU's single-game scoring mark with 50 points earlier this season at Cameron and has notched four 30-point performances over the past two seasons.

Van Buren has appeared in 37 games over the past two seasons. The guard from Midland has enjoyed a stellar collegiate career helping coach Grant McCasland to an NJCAA national championship and runner-up showing at Midland College before playing a role in MSU's NCAA Division II Elite Eight run last season.

Scoob has scored 225 points and connected on 45 3-pointers over the past two seasons.

Terrell might be playing in his last home game at MSU pending a medical redshirt decision after missing last season with a facial injury at Moorhead State.

The 6-5 acrobatic forward has dunked 40 times this season while averaging 8.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in just 17.1 minutes per game. Terrell rates amongst conference leaders with a 63.6 field goal percentage.

Trilli has been a part of two conference title teams over the past three seasons while appearing in 36 games at MSU.

The 6-5 forward connected for a career-high nine points against Texas A&M-Kingsville last season.

About the Rams

Overtime and Angelo State have been synonymous terms in 2010-11.

The Rams have played a total of 14 overtime periods over nine games this season to match Barton's (N.C.) NCAA Division II mark previously set in 2006-07.

Interestingly, MSU and Angelo State have played to overtime in each of their last two meetings as the Mustangs claimed a 105-100 win in the Rams' trip to Wichita Falls last season and Angelo State claimed an 82-81 win earlier this season at Junell Center.

Angelo State has played without LSC Player of the Year LaMarshall Corbett (20.1 points, 4.5 rebounds) in LSC South Division after he was suspended indefinitely prior to MSU's Jan. 12th date in San Angelo.

Then the Rams lost senior forward Ridge McKeither (18.1 points, 10.4 rebounds) with a serious leg injury suffered at Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 26th.

Still, the Rams have a 5-3 mark since led by senior guard Richard Thomas who has raised his average to 18.8 points per game and has led Angelo State in each of their last five outings including a 40-point performance against Eastern New Mexico on Feb. 16.

Senior guard Steven Moore adds 13.3 points and 3.4 assists while junior forward LaDonn Huckaby (7.3 points, 5.5 rebounds) and junior guard Joey Lenox (7.1 points) are the Rams' other significant contributors.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Angelo State meet for the 62nd time on the hardwood Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs own a 39-22 edge in the series that dates back to the 1965-66 season while the teams have split their last eight meetings of the series.

But MSU has been dominant over the Rams at D.L. Ligon Coliseum with a 25-3 overall mark and have won the last 18 games played between the programs under the dome.

Angelo State's last win came by an 86-76 count on Jan. 7, 1988.
