About the Mustangs

The "Super Seven" is down to the "Fighting Four" in Midwestern State's drive for its first Lone Star Conference Championship berth since 2002-03.

The Mustangs have won three-straight conference games for the first since 2004-05, but face a pivotal stretch over the next eight days where in all likelihood MSU needs three wins to make the postseason.

Currently at 5-5 in LSC South play, Midwestern is 1 1/2 games out of a three-way tie for second place as Angelo State, West Texas A&M and Abilene Christian are all 7-4.

MSU certainly controls its own destiny as it closes the season next week by hosting division leading Tarleton State and Angelo State before closing the regular season at Abilene Christian.

Assuming no upsets from the bottom trio of Incarnate Word, Eastern New Mexico or Texas A&M-Kingsville; ASU, WTAMU and ACU would all finish with at least 8-6 marks.

That means the Mustangs must win three of its last four starting Saturday night at West Texas A&M.

Senior Nolisha Markham continues to lead MSU in scoring at 14.5 points while pulling down 7.0 rebounds a contest. The Tulsa native has scored in double figures in 15 of her last 17 outings including a 15-point, 7-rebound effort Wednesday night against Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The Mustangs boast five other players averaging more than six points a game including junior forward Savannah Carver (11.2 points, 3.4 rebounds), junior forward Cierra Thompson (10.9 points, 4.0 rebounds), freshman guard Kirsti Degelia (10.0 points, 3.9 rebounds), senior guard Katiya Jackson (9.5 points, 4.8 rebounds) and junior forward Jazman Patterson (6.7 points, 6.5 rebounds).

About the Lady Buffs

West Texas A&M (14-10, 7-4) has split its last six games and heads into Saturday's contest in a three-way tie for the second place.

Junior forward Jamie Simmons paces the Lady Buffs at 18.4 points per game as the athletic forward also pulls in 8.3 rebounds to go along with 26 steals and 17 blocked shots in 24 starts this season.

Simmons is coming off of a career-high 38 points in Wednesday's 75-66 double overtime loss at Tarleton State.

Redshirt-freshman guard Arial Robertson comes off of the bench to score 11.3 points and 6.1 rebounds a contest, while senior guard Megan McLain (9.2 points, 4.7 rebounds), freshman guard Lacee Logan (7.5 points, 2.9 rebounds), junior guard Aly Sherman (6.4 points, 3.4 rebounds) and freshman guard Casey Land (6.3 points, 3.5 assists) all average better than six points a game for West Texas A&M.

The Lady Buffs are 6-3 on their home floor at First United Bank Center taking losses to Southwestern Oklahoma, Northeastern State and Tarleton State. It's the first WT's experienced three defeats at home since dropping five games in 2004-05.

About the Series

Midwestern State meets West Texas A&M for the 51st time on the hardwood Saturday night at First United Bank Center.

The Lady Buffs hold a 38-12 edge in the series that dates back to the 1976-77 season.

MSU snapped a 13-game losing streak to WT with a 62-57 win last month in Wichita Falls.

It was the Mustangs first win since beating the Lady Buffs 70-66 on Feb. 7, 2004 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, but MSU has not fared well in Canyon where WT has a commanding 20-3 edge.

The Mustangs won the first meeting between the teams at First United Bank Center by a 78-71 margin on Feb. 13, 2003, but have lost the last seven.
