Game Day: Mustangs continue "Super Seven" tonight against Texas A&M-Kingsville

Setting the Stage

It's payback time Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum for Midwestern State.

Texas A&M-Kingsville burned the nets for 13 3-pointers to blister the Mustangs by last month at Steinke Center. It was and is the Javelinas' lone LSC South Division win.

Now, MSU is ready to return the favor as the Mustangs enter Game No. 3 of the "Super Seven" in their drive for a Lone Star Conference Championship berth.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

About the Mustangs

Senior forward Nolisha Markham led a determined effort by a short-handed Midwestern State squad as the Mustangs rolled past Incarnate Word 71-60 Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Markham worked for a team-high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds as MSU battled without freshman guards Kirsti Degelia and Rebekah Cluley, who were each held out of the contest with concussions.

Junior forward Cierra Thompson added a strong performance of 14 points and nine rebounds while Katiya Jackson and Savannah Carver added 13 and 12 points each, respectively, to provide the scoring punch.

Perhaps, the strongest effort of the night came from junior guard Karissa Lang, who handled point guard duties for all but three minutes of the win. The Fort Bragg, Calif. native finished with season-high eight assists to go along with five points and four rebounds and committed two turnovers in 37 minutes.

MSU (8-13, 4-5) has now won three of their last four LSC Division matchups for the first time since the 2004-05 season and boast four double-digit scorers for the first time since the 2000-01 LSC championship squad.

Markham leads the way with 14.5 points a game followed by Carver (11.2), Thompson (11.0) and Degelia (10.5).

The Mustangs trail Angelo State by 1 1/2 games for the fourth and final LSC South Division playoff berth, but close with three of its last five at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Midwestern has won its last three on its home floor and is 7-3 under the dome this season.

About the Javelinas

Texas A&M-Kingsville (3-19, 1-9) brings a five-game losing streak into Wednesday night's contest and has lost 12 of their last 13.

The lone win was an 85-65 decision over Midwestern, but things appear so bad in Kingsville that even JavelinaAthletics.com has listed the game in Wichita Falls as a win for the Mustangs long before the tip.

Junior guard Kelly Bastow, freshman forward Novella Thomas and freshman forward Chelsea Solis combined for 11 3-pointers as TAMUK connected on 13-of-22 (59.1 percent) of its treys in the Javelinas' early win over the Mustangs on Jan. 26 in Kingsville.

Thomas, who leads TAMUK with 10.5 points per game, and Solis (9.5 points per game) poured in 19 points each to lead the Javelinas in the win while Bastow (7.5 points per game) pitched 17 points.

Sophomore post Victoria Gonzalez remains the Hoggies top inside threat at 8.8 points and 9.4 rebounds a game.

Texas A&M-Kingsville averages just 6.5 made 3-pointers per game for the season and shoots 31.2 percent from the arc.

The Javelinas score 59.2 points a contest and allow 72.0.

TAMUK is 0-12 away from Steinke Center this season.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Kingsville meet for the 31st time on the hardwood Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The series is knotted at 15-15, but the Javelinas have the last six meetings of the series that dates back to the 1994-95 season.

Former standout Stacey Staten delivered a 19-point, six-rebound, six-assist performance to lift the Mustangs to their last victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville by a 62-55 count on Jan. 19, 2008 at Ligon Coliseum.

Midwestern State is 8-6 all time against the Javelinas in Wichita Falls.
