Game Day: No. 21 Mustangs streak into Thursday night's contest at Northeastern State

Setting the Stage

No. 21 Midwestern State rolls into Thursday night's Lone Star Conference crossover contest at Northeastern State with an 11-game winning streak.

The Mustangs have won their last 21 games against LSC North Division competition dating back to their last trip to Tahlequah during the 2008-09 season.

Tipoff at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 6.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State continues as one of the most dominant teams in NCAA Division II.

The Mustangs are riding an 11-game winning streak while blowing the opposition out by a margin of 24.6 points per game during the run.

Senior guard Chris Hagan had his five-game string with at 20 points snapped Monday night agianst Newman, but remains NCAA Division II's seventh leading scorer at 23.9 points per game - a number which also leads the Lone Star Conference.

Junior transfer guard Michael Loyd continues to come on strong leading the Mustangs with 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds in their 89-69 win over Newman on Monday night. He has scored at least 13 points in each of his last four outings since pouring in 20 second-half points against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Dec. 16.

Junior guard Deuce Nichols has knocked down at least two 3-pointers in each of the last six games as the Mustangs continue to receive wide-spread production on the permeter.

Midwestern's forward combination of David Terrell (7.5 points, 5.8 rebonds), Charlie Logan (6.6 points, 4.3 rebounds), Darrick Thomas (6.6 points, 5.9 rebounds) and Thomas Colbert (4.2 points, 5.2 rebounds) combine for 24.9 points and 21.2 rebounds a contest.

About the RiverHawks

Northeastern State has lost its last two games and five of its last seven, but the RiverHawks have fared very well at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse in 2010-11.

NSU is 4-1 on its home court with its one loss coming to Abilene Christian by a 63-35 margin. The RiverHawks own Division II wins over Harding (Ark.) and Angelo State in Tahlequah.

The RiverHawks are led by senior guard Dominique Gaines. The 2009-10 first-team All-LSC North performer is averageing 19.4 points per game while pulling down 4.9 rebounds per game and dishing out 3.5 assists.

Fellow senior guard Antoine Branch adds 13 points a contest for the pound it out, motion oriented RiverHawks while juniors Jermaine Bransford (9.2 points, 5.6 rebounds) and Justin Johnson (7.3 points, 5.2 rebounds) are the top inside threats.

Northeastern State (5-7) averages 66.1 points a game and allows 67.6.

About the Series

Midwestern State meets Northeastern State for the 21st time on the hardwood Thursday night at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse.

The Mustangs own a 12-8 edge in the series that dates back to 1978, but are 3-5 against the RiverHawks at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse in Tahlequah.

MSU has won six of the last seven games in the series with its lone loss coming by a 56-55 count on Dec. 15, 2008 in Tahlequah. That was also the last time the Mustangs lost to an LSC North Division foe and have won 21 games since.
