Game Day: Mustangs face crucial matchup against No. 20 West Texas A&M

Setting the Stage

The tone for the rest of Midwestern State's season will be set beginning with Saturday night's Lone Star Conference South Division slugfest with No. 20 West Texas A&M.

The Mustangs and Buffs are part of a three-way tie for third place in the ultra-competitive South Division just one game behind Incarnate Word and Tarleton State.

Four of MSU's next five games will come against that top grouping.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State heads into the meat of the Lone Star Conference South Division possibly without the services of the league leading scorer Chris Hagan.

Hagan suffered a dislocated toe in last Saturday's double overtime loss at Incarnate Word then missed MSU's 72-57 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night at Steinke Center.

His status is day-to-day.

In his absence, different Mustangs have stepped up to fill the scoring void.

Junior guard Deuce Nichols started the trend by pouring in a season-high 20 points - all after halftime - against Incarnate Word.

Then junior point man Kevin Loyd found his stroke from the arc in Wednesday's win over the Javelinas. The transfer from Grambling connected on four 3-pointers and went 6-of-9 from the field to finish with a season-high 20 points.

Different players have stepped up all season to compliment Hagan, who averages 22.6 points a contest.

Junior backcourt mate Michael Loyd is the only other Mustang averaging double figures for the season at 12.4 points a contest, but the team shares the ball well as eight other players average at least 4.6 points a contest.

Eight other MSU players have scored at least 10 points in a game this season.

About the Buffaloes

No. 20 West Texas A&M rebounded after its only two losses of the season to win its last three games including a 44-36 win over Tarleton State Saturday night in Canyon.

The Buffs opened the season with 13-straight wins before dropping games at Incarnate Word and at home to Eastern New Mexico.

The losses correlated with the loss of junior point guard Lionel Foster, who was limited to just 21 minutes at Incarnate Word and missed the loss to ENMU altogether.

Foster averages 8.4 points a game and leads the Lone Star Conference with 5.1 assists per game. The pesky defender notches a league leading 2.4 steals per game as well.

West Texas A&M looks to senior LaDarius Hall to provide scoring punch as the 6-2 guard leads a balanced scoring attack with 12.3 points while adding 4.1 rebounds a contest.

Junior guard Rod Little tallied 11.4 points and 3.1 rebounds a game while senior guard Joe Mincey pitches in 10.7 points and 4.2 rebounds a games.

The Buffaloes also receive significant scoring contributions from senior forward Jacquiese Holcombe (8.2 points, 5.7 rebounds) and junior forward Courtney Carr (6.7 points, 5.3 rebounds).

West Texas A&M sports the No. 2 scoring defense in the LSC allowing a scant 60.9 points a game. The Buffs average 71.2 points a contest.

About the Series

Midwestern State and West Texas A&M meet for the 55th time on the hardwood Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Buffs own a 32-22 advantage in the series which dates back to the 1947-48 season and have won four of the last six games between the teams.

The teams have split the last two season series with MSU claiming a 90-69 win last season at Ligon Coliseum before the Buffs retaliated with a 68-58 victory at First United Bank Center. It was the biggest loss of the Grant McCasland era.

The Mustangs own an 11-5 edge over WT all time at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

No. 20 West Texas A&M represents the Mustangs' third nationally ranked opponent of the season. MSU experienced setbacks to No. 18 Central Oklahoma (68-61/Jan. 8) and No. 9 Incarnate Word (90-83/Jan. 22) earlier this season.

MSU is 19-39 all time against teams ranked in the NABC Top 25.
