Game Day: Mustangs look for 32nd straight at Ligon Coliseum

Setting the Stage

Midwestern State hosts the final contest before first semester final exams against East Central (Okla.) Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes following the women's game which begins at 6.

The Mustangs (4-1) have rebounded from a season opening loss to Fort Hays State at the South Central Region Challenge in Bartlesville to win their last four - all by double figure margins.

The Tigers (5-1) of new head coach Joe Redmond are off to their best start in many seasons, beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 53-49 last Saturday to open Lone Star Conference crossover play.  But ECU needed overtime to beat Southwestern Christian 57-54 on Tuesday, a team MSU beat by 11 in Wichita Falls.

About the Mustangs

Preseason Sporting News All-America guard Chris Hagan leads the Mustangs scoring 21.6 points a game to go along with 4.6 assists and 2.4 steals a contest.

The senior guard from Houston came on hit 11-of-18 shots from the floor, including 3-of-5 from the three-point arc, to tally 27 points with four steals in MSU's 75-41 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday.

Hagan was coming off of a 28-points, six-assist contest versus Northern New Mexico on Nov. 23 and an 18-point, 10-assist effort in the Mustangs' home opening victory over Southwestern Christian on Nov. 17.

Junior forward David Terrell is coming off of his best effort and second consecutive double-double of the season with 16 points and 19 rebounds against Southeastern.  He posted 15 points and 12 rebounds against Northern New Mexico.

Midwestern, who is looking to extend its home court winning streak to 32 games, has won its last 15 games against LSC North Division competition dating back to a 56-55 loss at Northeastern State on Dec. 15, 2008 when Aaron Arango was granted a pair of free throws with less than a second remaining after plowing over MSU All-America guard Nolan Richardson on an out-of-control scramble to the bucket.

About the Tigers

Coach Joe Redmond brings a new approach to the game to East Central University.

Instead of the fast-paced game of the last two seasons, the Tigers are playing deliberate offense and tough defense.

ECU is averaging 62.5 points a contest, while allowing opponents just 57.5.

Senior Denarius Darby leads the Tigers with 14 points a game, while grabbing 6.5 rebounds to go with his three assists a contest.

Junior Jamal Edwards joins him with 12.3 points a contest and grabs 7.7 boards an outing, while dishing out 4.3 assists.

Newcomer Caprest Rhone, a junior transfer from Lamar (Colo.) Community College, adds 9.2 points.

Senior Antwone Snead, a transfer from Division I Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 9.8 a contest.

The Tigers shoot 43.2 percent from the field, but are only allowing opponents to connect on 38.9 percent of their shots.

About the Series

Midwestern State meets East Central for the 27th time on the hardwood Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs own a decisive 20-6 edge in the series that dates back to 1972 and have won six of the last seven meetings between the programs, including last season's 103-85 win on Dec. 14, 2009 in Ada, Okla.

MSU is 12-2 all-time against the Tigers at D.L. Ligon Coliseum with ECU's victories coming in 2001 and 2003 by a grand total of three points.
