WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Nine minutes and 24 seconds elapsed between made jumpers by
Thomas Colbert Tuesday night in the first half on Gene Keady Court at Mackey Arena.
That was all the time the Purdue Boilermakers needed to reel off a 17-1 run to put away No. 20 Midwestern State 78-58 in the Mustangs' final exhibition game of 2010-11.
"These guys are really disappointed over that little stretch," MSU coach
Grant McCasland said. "For the most part, I feel like we were competitive on the defensive end. Ultimately that stretch ended up being the difference in the game."
Midwestern played the Boilermakers, who are ranked No. 8 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll and 14th in the Associated Press Poll, even through the first media timeout as junior
Thomas Colbert knocked down a jumper to tie the game 6-6.
Purdue's D.J. Byrd and Terone Johnson canned 3-pointers to highlight a 17-1 run as the Boilermakers pushed the advantage to 23-7 on a Patrick Bade jumper with 8:11 to play in the opening half before Colbert's jumper from the short corner ended the bleeding.
"This is a great experience for Midwestern State and our basketball program," McCasland said. "Playing teams like this exposes weaknesses faster than we would otherwise. They just exposed everything we have. You won't play in a more hostile environment than this."
Purdue would push the lead to 20 in the first half before the Mustangs before
Michael Loyd sandwiched a layup and a 3-pointer around a
Chris Hagan steal and layup to pull MSU within 35-22 with 1:41 to go in the first half.
The Boilermakers forced Midwestern into 19 turnovers in the opening half converting the miscues into 14 points.
"No question Purdue has one of the best defensive teams I've seen," McCasland said. "They are aggressive and just sped us up. We need to get better and get better in a hurry."
The Mustangs committed just four turnovers in the second and would pull to within 36-24 when
Charlie Logan opened scoring in the second half with a jump hook, but that's as close as MSU would get.
Junior guard
Michael Loyd paced Midwestern with 17 points and pulled down four rebounds while senior guard
Chris Hagan went 9-for-10 at the charity stripe to finish with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Logan chipped in eight points and three rebounds before fouling out in 11 minutes of court time, while
Thomas Colbert tallied seven points and five rebounds and
Darrick Thomas had six points and a game-high 11 boards.
Freshman guard Terone Johnson led a trio of Boilermaker in double figures with 17 points while Patrick Bade added 13 points respectively.
MSU limited returning All-America guard E'Twaun Moore to 3-of-9 from the floor on his way to 15 points and seven rebounds, while AP Preseason All-America JaJuan Johnson struggled from the floor (2-for-9) but tallied eight points and eight rebounds.
"I thought we did a great job on those guys, but they had other guys step up," McCasland said. "They are really deep with some of the most talented players in the country. That's what makes them a great Division I program."
The Mustangs open the regular season at the South Central Region Challenge this weekend at Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville, Okla.
MSU battles 2009-10 regional qualifier Fort Hays State (Kan.) Friday before facing off against Emporia State (Kan.) on Saturday. Both games tip at 6 p.m.
